I mean that is not hard, but it is a tremendous amount of data ...

I think they should have a way to send the data to all the crunchers to triangulate. That way we could be crunching data in addition waiting for some triggers.

I would not be surprised if that was in the plans.
It is not clearly said in the science section and the plans, but I think I think that is what they may be thinking.
See the Research Center, Development Opportunities section of their site: http://qcn.stanford.edu/research/opportunities.php :

2. QCN will develop more sophisticated event detection and trigger association algorithms to handle the large quantity of data expected/needed.
3. QCN will develop data distribution systems for dissemination to seismologists. Input is needed from fellow scientists as to what data types are desired (Please contact Jesse F. Lawrence.

Btw why would it need soldering for a USB sensor??

Outside the US it comes as a kit. I have no idea why.
I can't even see why their is a different version, I'd say that everyone should just by the US version.

I believe that they don't ship outside the US/Canada. Students ship them out from an office on campus, so they don't want to mess with the VAT.

Oh, I see, still it's totally daft that the non US one needs soldering , that's gonna put a lot of people off.
