3.1 speaker set up?

Looking to upgrade from my sound bar set-up but don't want to deal with surround speakers. Any recs for speakers for a 3.1 system set up? Budget is around $600 total w/o a receiver.

For $600 just put together two fronts, a center and a sub. Go to a store an listen to some things. I love my Polk RTi's but some people don't.

I live in San Diego.

Any recs for two fronts + center? I would prefer a medium sized front, with a tweeter in there.

At $600 I would skip the center and go with a 2.1. Put the extra money into the sub.

Maybe even go with a 2.2. Get a pair of Dayton 1200s and place them under a pair of bookshelf speakers.

A pair of the Daytons is about $300. Leaves $300 for a nice set of speakers.

+1 with gar655. Skip the center and go 2.1.

Recommending speakers is like recommending food. We all have different tastes. However we do know generally what's good. I began with BIC v52s which I still like, but have gotten accustomed to NHTs. Many people I know prefer the BICs. If you play acoustic instruments you'll like the NHTs.

Good news about the NHTs is they updated their legendary SuperZero which are around $100 each now. The BIC v52s haven't been really updated since the early 2000's.

3.1 works well with a receiver that does phantom surround. I also did phantom center at one point and it was very good too.

As far as speakers budget and what you like are what it's about.

Polk and Energy are great BANG FOR BUCKS.
