I have a buddy that wants to get a nice stereo setup for his living room.

He doesn't want to mess with surround for some reason, and this is what I've come up with so far. He wants to use newegg because he has a couple hundred worth of giftcards.

Lemme know what you think.

1 YAMAHA 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver RX-V565 (Using this for expandability)
$429.99

2 Polk Audio Monitor 60 Cherry Floorstanding loudspeaker Single
$149.99 each

1 Polk Audio CS10 Cherry Center Speaker Single
$99.99

1 Polk Audio PSW505 12
$249.99

Subtotal: $1,079.95

That is not a very good sub. Leave out the sub and get something else.

Well, for starters, you can get that receiver for $353. What features is he looking for in a receiver? For that price, I'd go with this Denon 2308. It's got the really nice Audyssey features and is an excellent receiver at that price. It's refurbished, but all the reviews I've read about Denon refurbs is that they can't tell they're not new. Dakmart also offers a one-year warranty just like you'd get with a new receiver.

How many hundreds does he have in newegg gift cards? If you just buy the 3 speakers from Newegg, you'd still be at $400 there. I agree with sdifox that there are much better subs in that price range.

What size room does he have? Is the system for HT, music, or a mixture of the two?

Edit: The CS1 is $90 at Newegg and the same thing as the CS10. Is he willing to spend more than $1100? He could get a pair of Monitor 70s and a CS2 $590. By saving $80 on the receiver, that would leave him with only $140 for the sub, which wouldn't be enough IMO. Here's an example of a decent $360 sub.

Edit2: Here's a quote from another thread about a less-expensive sub:

If you don't mind waiting a little while to get it, I think the Bic F-12 for $182 shipped is a much better sub than the Polk. Here's a very long avsforum thread on that sub.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I'll get with him this evening. He just asked me to price it on newegg. I'll see what I can figure out.

if he has a few hundred in gift cards, use it for whatever is a better deal at newegg and get the rest somewhere else. For example, Vanns has some really good prices on the Klipsch synergy line.
