I am wondering if I would be able to overclock a 3.0e prescott to 4ghz levels with an SP-94+vantec tornado? Would I be able to do this or would heat become such an issue? Also the case I am gettign is the Antec P160 with 2x120mm fans.

I am askign this because i don't know if I should go northwood or prescott.

I'd go northwood myself, as I had a 3.0E and got it up to about 3900 or so, but it took too much voltage and cooling to keep it stable there. I had it water cooled, with chilled water at 47f, and it still ran a bit hot. The New Prescott stepping is due out on May 7th, and they may clock better and run cooler, only time will tell, but I personally wouldn't bother with a Prescott right now.

The safe bet is to get a C. I doubt you'll hit 4 with either processor on air and there are lots of heat issues beyond the processor with an E.

Mainly out of curiosity and the need to dabble, I am building a 2.8E system with a SP-94 and a Delta fan with lots of air flow. I'll report back in a couple of days. But if it were my only system or my main system, I would have gotten a C or A64.

Thing is the case is aluminum and 2x120mm fans will provide great air coolign alogn with a sp-94 with a 92mm fan. I am going to buy it and see what happens. I can always sell it and buy some other P4.

How did you chill the water? Did you use an incubator?

I mainly want the prescott over the northwood because of the 1mb cache,sse3 intructions and most importantly the ability to overclock. I would get a northwood but I am not assured what spec it is,30 caps or 12 caps. So I figure that with prescott I am assured overclocking will not be held back by the architecture, but maybe by the heat.

In order of preference:

1)3.0c sl78z 1.25 volts
2)3.0e prescott

Optimummind, I now use a drop in chiller, into a reservoir, and control the temp with a digital temp controller, previously I had a Dehumid rad dropped in the water..

Big Lar, do you have any pics of your setup? I'm trying to come up with ways to make the cooling more efficient and could use some ideas.

Once you can beat the heat the 1mb cache kicks a$$. Ive had the 2.8e@3.5e w/my sp94 +tt scf2@3500

I have 3.0e (prescott) p4c800 and Thermaltake Xaser III Damier (whopping 6fans)

Actually prescott OCs pretty well w/o any temp. issues.

Iam keeping mine at about 40C (3.3, 220FSB) full load at bout 50C and this is

PC probe temps. my thermal sensors are bout 5 -10C cooler than PC probe.

I think you can OC it to 3.6 under good air cooling condition. (and of courese higher under water)

4.0? that's pusing it man your CPU temp will hit 70C I bet.

just check this out.
