I've never played an actual Sims game.

Any helpful AT reviews out there?

In terms of sale prices, $10 seems like a bit too much. This game is over three years old now. Too bad, bceause if it were $5, it would've been an impulse buy for me.

For $10 I think I'll pass though. I spent dozens of hours playing the first Sims game, 12 years ago. Back then The Sims was still being made by Maxis and not EA. I have the feeling that EA removed any charm the series used to have when they took over development duties. (Or maybe I'm just looking through nostalgia glasses)

The series is still fairly full of charm. Lots of stuff to do even in the base game. The problem is what it always has been which is that playing the game can get tedious. If you are all about creating houses, lots and situations and seeing what happens it is very well done but the gaming aspects are the same old time management with oddly skewed timeframes (1.5 hours to pee for example). The expansions are a mixed bag and it really just depends on what you like to do. The stuff packs are pretty much a ripoff at $20 but might be ok at 66% off.

One thing though is this is the cheapest it has been. So even though it is old, it is holding is value (must be to be pumping out new expansions still). I picked it up, sigh whats wrong with me.

I just remember The Sims 1 having some really quirky humor. Not "quirky" as in cheesy 12-year-old humor, but the game had some stuff that teetered on the edge of being politically-incorrect, or even offensive. :p But it was awesome. I just can't imagine EA doing that sort of thing anymore.

Also, it had some very well-written, beautiful music.
