So I had an extra motherboard and memory, and wanted to play, and found the cheapest conroe core I could find, $38 Conroe Celeron 420. Bumped the cvore up to 1.35, and put a stock Q6600 fan on it (you should see the joke of a fan they included)

So anybody else OC'ed this baby ? From 1.6 to 3.04 ? what do you think ?

I got one for $31 OEM at eWiz a while back. Mine is BSEL modded and in my Dell Vostro 200 running at 2.66GHz default Vcore. I think it was fine at 3.2GHz in my IP35-E, but my Tforce965PT wouldn't get past 3GHz.

Anyone notice that the prices on the Conroe Celerons at NewEgg appear to be increasing.

I thought that fan was a joke too, but it works very well in a 3400 Mhz rig with a 1.400 VCore. The single core chips don't use much juice, so that little stock fan is fine, until you really push the voltage up.

Clever design on those Intel stock fans. A relatively large and open fan blows the air down over extruded fins, which are curved and bifurcated for enhanced cooling. Then the air shoots out to cool the surrounding components in every direction. The solid slug in the center, where the fan has a dead spot anyway, takes heat away from the core. Wish all my heatsinks were blowing down like that.

The ATI retail boxed fans for the X2-4000 Brisbane are a joke. Those fans are still sitting in the boxes, and the chips are humming along at 3100 Mhz+.

I'm amazed. I'm even more amazed that Intel is shipping those half-size heatsinks for their E2200 chips. I guess if you only run them at stock speeds, that would be enough, but who does that???

i bsel modded my celeron 420 up to 2.13. its too hard to do the mod up to 1333 bus (or well i was real lazy, its a lot more work).

i doubt 3.0 is particularly high though. my e4400 does 2.66 at default, and the celeron 420 is based on a similar core.

i use my celeron 420 with a older celeron D 3xx series fan which is full size. i had a celeron D420 retail for a while on another box i made, and the fan that comes with it does suck badly.

its about half size of any other lga775 retail fan, and it isnt PWMM 4 pin. I guess for $35 or whatever you cant really complain, every dollar counts at that point.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but can anyone tell me how to do the BSEL mod on this Celeron (420)?
I'm got one in my HTPC, pushed it to 3.2GHz, but, I wonder if it could go higher with the mod.

Thanks.

I think this is excellent for a HTPC but I wish I'd gone for the Celeron e1200 instead of the 420 as a second core for another $10-$20 is worth it (if you plan on doing any transcoding or running other background services on your HTPC). I picked up a CircuitWriter Pen at the RatShack (should have just gone with the defogger repair kit from an auto parts store as RatShack wouldn't match their closeout web price).

razer: Lots of details out there via google:

Going to BSEL my 420 tonight -- if all goes well the next up is an e2180.

edit: One point though -- the single core 420 is a good buy in terms of power -- 35w max versus 65w for e2180 (and probably e1200). I can't wait to upgrade my current HTPC that has a Celeron D 340 heating up the house.

I bet :). I had buyer's remorse after I received the Celeron 420 but it was part of a package deal with motherboard at NewEgg and I wanted the motherboard. Didn't get to BSEL the 420 but it'll be done tomorrow.
