$3,000 = too expensive for a trip to Beijing, China for a study abroad program?

Instead of going to Atlanta, I want to go visit someplace I'll never get to go

The program lasts 6 weeks
The fee covers housing on campus, three provided meals a day, tuition cost for 6 credits (taking two courses which doesn't satisfy my degree requirements but it's not an issue for me), tour to all the sites like the Great wall and etc.

The cost doesn't cover roundtrip airfare
I'll have to pay for that separately

What do you think? better to save my money?

I would personally spend the $$ backpacking thru youth hostels thru Taiwan(one week), Japan (two weeks), Hong Kong(five days), South Korea(one week) and the rest of the time in China. I'll bet that after two weeks in China staying with this program, things will get old and tired pretty fast. I spent 100 days in Japan 19 years ago and that was tooooo long to stay in one country.

You will be a "changed person" when you get back and learn to be a lot more tolerable with others. If your single and have the $$ - just do it.

or pick up a new habit.... CHIKAN!!!

i second the backpacking idea. i spent two months in china last year covering all parts of the country. probably spent about $3k for everything, and i got to see some really interesting places.

You have to pay for that? Next spring i'm heading to beijing on a full scholarship because some school there has a deal going with my school where they'll pay for us to go over there. That includes everything: flight/food/tuition, etc. Basically I'm getting a free vacation in china and have to take only 9 credits, a few of those being chinese.

BTW I'm not chinese, I don't speak a word of chinese, and am not really interested in learning chinese at all. But wow this is going to be one crazy experience. I have a buddy who used to live over there (another non chinese american) and he was able to rake in mad cash by being a freelance english teacher. So i'll also be doing that on the side.

I am going to Japan for a semester for the price of going here. There are a few trips form the college here where they pay like 3k for 2 weeks..I am like WTF? Why would you do that when you could just study abroad for a semester and pay nothing extra except living expenses

$3000 aint bad....

Last summer in Oxford ran about $5000
Fall semester in Netherlands back in 02 was over 6,000.

Go for it. You're going to be making Tommy Hilfiger wallets with a gun to the back of your head, but it'll build character.

😛

Do it! When I went to India it was $3,000 for nearly 3 weeks, plus all of the vaccinations I needed. The only thing I regreted was how long I waited before going!

I don't think that's too expensive, it seems about right.

The memories and lessons you will learn will be priceless, though.

Maybe look into opting out of the food budget. I don't know if they'll serve you food from the cafeteria's or whatnot, but due to the great exchange rate I highly recommend hitting up some of the nice restaurants while you are there. Even the really upscale restaurants won't set you back too much and you get VIP treatment.

I would just spend the 3k on plane ticket and join some travel tours if you want to visit China. There are so many amazing places and food waiting for you. The silk road route is amazing.
