2x512 or 1x1024 ram

is there any difference performance wise between 2x512MB and 1x1024MB ?

1gb sticks are usualy 3-4-4 which is bad, 2x 512 kits are usualy 2.5-3-3 which is much better.

as to your question, there is hardly any performance difference at all, you wont ever notice it. but i would consider a 1 gig stick, that way you could upgrade to 2 gigs in the coming years when 2 gigs becomes more normal. but i would need to know your system specs to give you a better reply..

yeah, depending upron your system or what you plan on doing with it would better determine which is best for you, a budget as well considering single 1GB sticks usually pack a hefty price.

I like to always have at least two sticks in my machines so that if one goes bad I won't be totally SOL...

I guess you don't buy sticks with a lifetime warranty or you overclock them...granted a 1GB stick you wouldn't really want to overclock...so if it goes bad you just get it replaced.

You can run the two sticks dual channel and they will have better timings.

There are a few 1GB chips out there that have better timings. A quick look over at newegg showed some Corsairs w/3-3-3 timings, some Kingstons with 2.5-3-3, and even some OCZ at 2 which I think has to be a typo as I haven't seen 1GB sticks that low ever. I think PQI makes some w/good timings as well. I don't think many people are having luck overclocking w/1GB chips, however.

My girlfriend's rig runs two of these

hardly any 'premium' compared to any other low latency DRAMs

Girls rig == 2x1024MB == 2-3-2-5-1

Personally, I would have to say 2x512. they would have better timings and run in dual channel - neither of which is a huge improvement. However, They would also be a buit cheaper. Zepper also had an interesting point about how if one fails, the PCdoes not become unusable until a replacement is had.

the only reason I could see justifying 1x1GB is if you were planning way ahead when PCs NEED more than 1GB to function well. However, by that time, 2x1GB packs will only cost $120 and have great timings. Overall, you wouldn't be saving much money...

It depends on your system as well. If you are using a P4, then dual channel makes a much bigger differance, since P4's are bandwidth hungry.

Dual channel + lower timings = difference (assuming you have a P4).
With an Athlon (64 or XP), you won't notice a difference.
