Question 2x32gb or 2x 48 gb? Gaming rig. OR 128GB CL34?

I seemed to have cracked 1 memory chip removing heat spreaders. They were 28CAS 32x2, now the damage is done. Would you replace with 26CAS 32x2 or go with 48 gb sticks?

So unfortunate that one chip edge cracked, I was using 10 or 15x jeweler glasses with light to clean them off when I found it.

It's just a tiny corner and the metal layer is not cracked, but I assume the material above the metal layer are the cells.

Did you try booting with it?
No, I will try it when I get the new ones and the HSF fitted. I have a gut feeling, like the time a tried removing a Ti4800 (? was a long time ago) and it's HSF was epoxied to the die, I scratched the PCB. Killed it.

EDIT:
The Lexar kit, thermal pads were not even close to what G-Skill is using, they came off without effort.

I'm not certain, but I believe the micron 48GB dimms use a newer process tech for the dram than the 32GB dimms.
They should run cooler and overclock better if this is the case.

I will let you know, they arrived today, I have been drinking and absolutely will not try removing heat spreaders tonight.

I can attest to them overclocking better. My 7200 48GB kit effortlessly overclocks to 8200 on my 245KF. But that's where it stops being good. The previous 8200 EXPO 32GB kit allowed me to set D2D to 34. The 48GB kit is somehow limiting me to barely 30 D2D. That's...disappointing.

I swear I replied to this thread yesterday but seems I either forgot to post or the forum glitched.

Or maybe my post was deleted?

Let's try again I guess: No, I wouldn't boot anything other than a cheap spare mobo with this cracked chip. It may work. Who knows but wouldn't risk it with expensive hardware.

New ones arrived.

It glitched, almost looked like it was being shut down. For me it was a few hours, went to bed before it came back.

I actually had this post ready to post when it happened. Minus this reply quote.

FYI 1.45v on Nova WiFi board is listing red text.

^^I thought you were getting 48 GB sticks instead of 32.

The forums did something strange right after you posted this last night. Even the emails I got about watched threads was missing its normal formatting.

WHOOPS, kids this is why you don't drink and order stuff from Newegg late in the evening.

Yeah, but it's not even 32GB in the picture, it says 2x24GB
Don't make me quote the above post again, they accepted a return, I'll grab the 2x48 or maybe 2x64. Depends, the crucial DIMMS without heat spreaders look interesting. OOS though.

My maths goes bad after a certain time of night.

On the plus side they are running the EXPO #s

EDIT: Jeez busting my boy parts over drunken ordering. Like none of you have done it before.

Need to go watch some Ridiculousnexx to feel better. Y'all got me battered and bruised.

BTW anyone interested in some 2x24 CL26 lmk before NE gets em back.

Who am I kidding, someone will be watching for that open box. They are white BTW just to help the search.

Igor don't you flame me.

Could pick up a CL34 128GB for not much more. Or go with the lower latency 48gb?
I would be tempted towards the 128GB. But that's just me.

Lower latency doesn't matter much for the X3D chip. But lots of RAM is essentially future proofing it.

The denser chips may also have bandwidth advantages under certain conditions.
