2x256 PC2700 or 1x512 PC3200?

About to buy some memory...will I get a performance increase using 2 DIMMs at 2700 as opposed to 1 at 3200? Specifically, thinking about a Samsung 2.5 module from Googlegear vs. two crucial 2.5.

Any thoughts? 🙂

Get the 3200. I don't think 2 sticks will do anything to affect performance significantly.

Get the 1 x 512MB now, and a second later as needed. The dual-channel DDR doesn't provide any significant speed increase in most applications, and certainly less than the 200mhz FSB you should be able to run at spec'd timings vs at 166mhz with the PC2700. I recently (2 months ago) purchased 2x256MB of Samsung Original True PC2700 and now wish I bought either 1 x 512MB or the full gig up front. Of course, the sticks only cost me ~$25 each, but thats pending $60 in rebates.

If you are getting 1x512 don't get samsung. Every review I come across (and personal experiences too) have barely been able to hit DDR400 at CAS3. I'd say get two 256MB sticks if you have an nForce2 board, anything other than that get one 512MB module.

I agree. If you have a dual-channel DDR board now I would get two 256mb modules. If you have a single-channel board get the 512mb module.

Don't have anything now, but unless Anand's KT400A reviews change my mind, I have an EpoX 8RDA+ coming in the mail.

What brand/type do you recommend? Within a reasonable price, I dont plan on very heavy overclocking -- maybe a bit just for sh!ts and giggles, but that's about it. 😉
