Hi, I currently have two GTX980s in SLI. I'm looking at replacing my monitor with the Asus ASUS ROG PG278Q 2560 x 1440 G-Sync monitor. Since the monitor has G-Sync and the resolution size do I need two GTX 980s? I was thinking I might sell one and upgrade another part of my desktop. Thanks.

If you want to play at decent FPS then keep both 980s....believe me. Check out my sig.

One is sufficient for 50-60 fps, but if you want the benefit of the high refresh rate, two is the way to go. G-Sync, however, can be appreciated with just one. Even so, two is the way to go here.

I've got 2x 970 with the ASUS ROG Swift and while even one will run most new games at over 30 fps, two is recommended if you want to stay around 60 fps.

That said, with G-Sync making everything feel smoother the second card might not be all that necessary if you don't want to use ULMB mode (which is great when you have a high framerate and play fast paced games).

I recommend you buy the display then test with both one and two cards the most demanding games you have and then decide. Just turn off SLI and try with one card. Note that currently you can't use DSR with G-Sync in SLI (Nvidia driver issue) so if you want to simulate how for example 4K would handle then I recommend testing it with your current display. Just having a G-Sync display connected disables DSR for SLI..it's stupid.

As ASUS has apparently had some issues with quality on these displays (mine is perfect though) make sure you check it for dead pixels or uniformity issues etc for as long as you can and then return and exchange if you find some problems. I wouldn't accept dead pixels or severe uniformity problems with a screen this expensive.

You certainly can play at over 60 FPS in almost all games with a single 980. There is no requirement to play all games at maximum settings, but if that is a requirement of yours, then you'll need 2 for the newest AAA games.
