2x 6990s; a year later

When i bought my 2x 6990 on the release date there was no game that really could "wow" me and justify the horse power of 2x 6990. I am looking for the same wow" factor that max payne brought back in the day... Any one can suggest any new games i should try? I might try crysis, i hear it has some nice graphix, are there any newer, better games that are not mind numbing like D3? Does not have to be FPS.

Max Payne 3 is pretty cool, Metro 2033, Crysis is always a good show off game, modded skyrim too
Tried skyrim, unmoded. Found storyline too boring, not really captivating. Graphix were good, but not jaw dropping.

May be i just grew out of gaming?

You need to mod it for Depth of Field, 4k textures and all kinds of effects. Then it will look good.

check out some crysis mods like real lifesis & cudaats

Maybe you need to play something different to get back into gaming 🙂

Braid
Limbo
World of Goo
Cave Story+
Botanicula
Rayman Origins
Portal 1/2

If you want a game with nice graphics:

- Crysis 1 with Mods
- Witcher 2 (amazing game)
- Metro 2033 (great atmosphere)
- Trine 2

Max Payne 3 has incredible visuals, some of the best high-res textures and incredible lighting and animations. And it runs like greased lightning, sooo smooth.

If you want a game with nice graphics:
- Trine 2

Trine 2 runs well on 5 year old hardware, not exactly taxing for CF 6990's. Heck, I put the game on my sister-in-law's 2006 iMac with an X1600 and it ran ok, though admittedly nowhere near max settings.

A new hobby might be in order if gaming is losing it's zest for you, or nothing can impress you. I'm looking at my old steinway piano and thinking a restoration project is in order. 😀
Just sayin.

Ya, the only reason I mentioned it is because the OP said he is bored of PC gaming and wants to try something different. Graphics wise, it's not demanding but looks very nice.

You need to mod it for Depth of Field...

Emulating a limitation of my vision is not really high on my list of "features". Depth of field doesn't add to gameplay at all. In fact, it is borderline silly. Any location you look at on the screen, should, by definition be in focus to you. Without eye-tracking, any construct of depth of field is just asinine because it has no way of putting your point of focus in focus. Instead it just turns in to "make things far away blurry, even when the player is looking directly at them on the screen because we don't know where the player is looking." which is just silly. That's not how our eyes work at all.

Aside from technical implementations and reasons for that, I think depth of field can be an artistic effect. Cinematographers (and even photographers with photographs) use it to great effect. But, I'm not saying that game developers are artistic, just that the effect has the capability of producing artistic effects.

Have you ever watched a movie? Notice the entire screen is not presented in focus. The focus on close objects makes the distant objects appear blurred. This is done for artistic effect, but it also simulates the way your eyes work naturally. When you look at someone you never see the entire scene before you in 100% focus. The focal point is the subject you're looking at while the rest is out of focus. This is natural and honestly simulating the way your eyes actually work enhances the realism factor.

Movie is intended for passive watching. The camera focuses on what the director wants it to focus. And that is just fine, in fact its more than fine its a wonderful cinematography technique.

In gaming the gamer plays a more active role. You are scanning the screen for enemies, items or whatever. Just like in real life you do not always focus your vision on the stuff right in front of you.
You could be hiding behind a tree while focusing your vision on the horizon, scanning for enemy activity. Unfortunately many DOF mods and effect simply put focus on the stuff right in front of you because without some eye tracking device it has no way of knowing what you want to be focusing at.

In the end it simply becomes a gimmick at best and a hindrance to gaming most of the time.
