EDITED:

I got 2x 256mb HyperX PC3000 for $50 each ($100 total) and it's running on my P4P800 board with a 2.8C. First of all, it this a good price for high performance ram?

I can run them dual-channel at 3.2ghz (228FSB, DDR 456) prime stable with 2-3-3-6 CAS2 with GAT enabled at 2.85v. The most I can get running at 2-2-2 is around 221FSB or DDR442 (I can run 2-2-2 at 228FSB, and boot to windows, but it's not 24hr prime stable). From the result, I assumed I got a BH-5 chip.

In the mean time, I was also able to acquire 2x 512mb Kingston Valum Ram (PC2700) with Hynix AT-D43 chips on them (4.3ns?). I was able to run them at 240FSB, DDR 480 (my CPU's max) at 3-4-4-8, and they cost about $70 each ($140 total).

Now, I will have to return one of the two because I ran out of funds.
Which one should I keep/return?

2x256mb (512mb) HyperX PC3000 (BH-5) - 228FSB, DDR456 with 2-3-3-6

or

2x512mb (1gb) Value Ram PC2700 (Hynix AT-D43) - 240FSB, DDR 480 with 3-4-4-8

I read a lot of articles and threads and my general impression was that for an AMD rig, I should defintely choose fast timing over bandwidth because AMD cpu doesn't need the bandwidth.

However, for a P4, there were mixed views and the results are leaning towards faster timing on most applications and games, but not for raw data processing stuff (encoding, transcoding, and these are things I was planning to do (e.g. video editing, encoding WMV, MP3, MPG2, DIVX).

Now, I am leaning towards the 2x512mb Hynix, because that will give me a higher CPU speed (higher FSB), and especially since I will have 1 gig of ram over 512mb or ram. So, would the 2x512 240FSB 3-4-4-8 be a better choice for me? Any opinions? or Objections? Thanks in advance.

No you would get very similar results. 221-228 MHz at those timings is excellent - definatly keep the PC3000 stuff!!!

Pepsimanz....

I would run the hyperX at 5:4 and 240fsb and jack the timings to 2,2,2 and GAT enabled and test them...In some of those encoding test the cas 2 timings will offset that bandwidth lead by the shear factor of cas2 and tight timings versus cas3 and loose timings. If the kingston value ram comes out on top I would stick with them cause in those apps timings are more important and then you know you will have the edge in the bandwidth hungry apps and so overal it will be the best performance for you....

Also will the kingston value ramm pull 2,2,2 at 5:4 at 240fsb???

dont forget ~ 512mb sticks are inherantly faster due to being double sided (4 banks vs 2 banks)...
