Would be building six servers total. Two Terminal Servers (50 users), Two MS SQL Database servers, and Two Web Service servers.. Coming out to be around 15k total for the six servers.. I would say the load on them is going to be very low compared to what you may run into elsewhere. Trying to be price conscience.. I am tempted to go with some 7200 RPM WD RE3 drives but recognize SAS is king right now.. Any opinions appreciated

Seems fine, but since the servers are going to be low load, have you considered building fewer servers and using virtualization?

Yes, I am going to have to see what the cost would be on it. I've read that Terminal Servers can be virtualized easily.. I may want to leave the MS-SQL, and IIS servers stand alone though. I'd say the other seven servers out of the 11 could easily be put into VMware ESX server.. I'm not up to date on the pricing cost of it though. I'd probably build two identical servers for the seven server VMware box.. We are also buying storage from a Datacenter so the savings in rackspace may be something I can justify since it isn't our power being eaten.

I also have speced out a Dell Server for these builds along with IBM/HP..

Here is the Dell below..

2 x Quad Core AMD Operton 2374 HE 2.2 Ghz

2x4GB 800 mhz Dual Ranked

3x 15k SAS 3 Gbps 3.3 Hotplug HDDs

Integrated SAS/SATA Raid 5 PERC 5/i Integrated Perc6/i integrated

Dell Remote Access Card

DVD Drive SATA

non redundant PSU

3438.00 per unit

If you can bear the cost, I would always go with a vendor. It is def. worth it when the shit hits the fan (and it will no matter if you build or buy :awe🙂.

Only thing I'm worried about is component failure on the supermicro board itself which is covered. I've called SuperMicro three times today going over certain little things from Memory, CPU, and RAID quesitons about the LSI card.. I still don't trust it like I would if I ordered from Dell, IBM, HP, or Oracle. I just like being able to drop 20k into something compared to 30k having someone else do it. I mainly worry about drive failures which sucks all around.. I'm not so sure about Fujistu drives.

Well, yeah I would trust that SuperMicro would take care of you. The question is, how long does their service take to get you a part? With a major vendor you can have a tech out same-day/next-day.

Something I'll ask them tomorrow.. I believe they state they offer 1year on parts, and 3years on labor? So I would assume their board is only good for a year, and it's up to you to have working spares..

Thinking about doing this now for VMware..
