It sure is. I need a main hd though and the 5400rpm spindle speed will have pretty bad seek times. Either way its still a good deal. :)

I have this drive. Bought it back little while when it was $95 shipped. Got good reviews, and is pretty fast for what it is. Its also very silent as well. Some say it is a fast drive though its at 5400, I am more then happy with it I bought a 2nd one this morning. Works great in my netgear readynas n+.

Have two of these I bought last week on the egg when they were $95. Still need to add them to my file server.

Benches? I have them sitting on the floor beside me, but I am to lazy to drag out the server and put them in.

Ordered mine last week from Superbiiz. Installing and copying files over from my Samsung F1 now. I've found that Samsung is very slow to get drives into tester's hands. I have yet to see a serious review of these drives, even though they are selling like hotcakes, almost entirely on word of mouth. Maybe Samsung is happy enough with its current sales level and doesn't feel like jeopardizing that by having them tested, but I assume the tests would be very glowing as they have been for all the Samsung F-series drives. I purchased my F3 months before reviews came out, and I'm happy that the reviews showed it was a great deal.

I would have formatted one and done some testing on my desktop, but I said F it and threw them both in my WH2 box and added them to the storage pool.

I am more concerned about power, heat and reliability to be honest.

Read: 131.9MB/s Write: 122.5MB/s
512K
Read: 46.74MB/s Write: 79.14MB/s
4K

Western Digital Caviar Blue 640GB 7200rpm:
Sequential:
Read: 110.4MB/s Write: 115.3MB/s
512K
Read: 45.01MB/s Write: 69.87MB/s
4K

Samsung F1 750GB 7200rpm:
Sequential: (edited after test re-run)
Read: 69.17MB/s Write: 73.08MB/s
512K
Read: 37.09MB/s Write: 69.89MB/s

NIOCE, I figured they would be close to the WD 640 platters in performance. Glad to be surprised.

I've been watching the price of these the past week and a half, about every couple of days they go down to that $99 price and even to $95 earlier last week. I'm planning on buying 2-3 of them to replace some of my older and smaller capacity drives.

IMO 5400rpm makes this deal COLD.

You can get the 2TB Seagate drives for around this price.

You could but these drives are meant for storage. You don't need the 7200rpm for storage. These drives are cooler, more efficient, and use less power.

Most people still care about access times.

The power savings are minimal. You'll go from maybe 7 watts on a 7200rpm drive to 5 watts on a 5400rpm one.

It's not just the access times that go down with 5400rpm either; sequential transfers will drop as well.

Actually, I care about a drive lasting more than a few days, and thats why I don't buy Seagate.

And thanks for NOT having a better deal to post. A link to a CDN home page, and a "sale that ended" deal. Wheee!
