I was in Fry's earlier, and saw a Hitachi 2TB external USB 3.0 hard drive for $99, I thought I was hallucinating. Even for someone looking for an internal drive, you could just rip the drive out and use it as such (not sure if the warranty would still work on the bare drive at that point though?).

I have no idea if it's got a 5400rpm or 7200rpm drive inside, but one source I saw specced it at 7200rpm. Either way it's dirt cheap considering the price of even 1TB WD greens right now.

Prices good until closing on Dec 1st. There were several in stock at the Plano, TX store when I was there today at around 4PM.

My apologies if it's already been posted!

EDIT 12/3, deal is expired. Price is now $129, drive has been confirmed to be a 7200RPM drive though, so not terrible when compared to 2TB 7200RPM loose drive cost currently.

Check out best buy, I bought a 3 tb external USB 3.0 hd for $99 there the other day. Maybe hd supply isn't as bad as we thought.

Thanks, Greg!

It's really odd how cheap some of these deals on Externals are while the prices for Internals are off the charts.

I built out a new machine with a 60gb ssd drive for the main partition figuring I'd just throw a standard HD in there later. Whola...floods. I thought I was screwed. I just picked this up! I have USB 3.0 ports so I'm actually leaving this external. I don't know how much of a benefit I'd get putting it internal and I like having it external.
Thanks OP!

BTW, I was at the Atlanta/Alpharetta Frys. They were 'sold out' but the nice helper lady found another stash in a different area!

Edit: It sounds like USB 3.0 should put it on par with just throwing it as a SATA drive internally. You lose a few nicities that may boost it a bit here or there, but it sounds pretty much on par. I'm very happy with a 0 install, usb 3.0, 2TB external drive. Again, thanks OP!

External drives were assembled weeks, if not months ago. So their cost basis to the retailer is off pre-flood component pricing.

Newegg on the other hand probably sells through SATA drives very quickly, so the OEMs are already invoicing them at current price levels.

To the consumer, it seems counter-intuitive because you have some people arbitraging by buying up externals, ripping out the drives and Fleabaying them.
