2nd UPDATE :- 28 sep

I went to the local computer shop and paid him $20 to try out a new PSU of 750watts Corsair. He opened a brand new one and plugged it in. GPU crashed the same way,Temps don't exceed 60C, crashes within 5 seconds, fine for surfing internet and watching movies!

I have now asked him to do me a favor and test just the video card in a system other than mine. I have left the store now as it would take some time for him to set it up.

Will wait and watch.......... This is so SO disappointing

1st UPDATE:
OK i finally got it to work, after I reset the CMOS battery! Everything works fine until I start a game!

within a few minutes, there are all sorts of white fungus like white sponge marks on the screen and the whole systems come to a halt!

I downloaded furmark and ran it.! it takes about 5 seconds for the system to come under a full halt and then I get a message, the video card has recovered from a serious error!

Temps never exceed 58C

QUESTIONS:

1. Is this the power supply or a possibility there is something wrong with the video card! I manually set the GPU fan at 100%; no problems untill i start a game or furmark?

2. does the GPU use 100% of its power when the GPU fan is set to 100% manually without playing a game?

ORIGINAL POST:
According to benchmark reviews, the ASUS TOP 1gb gtx 460 (which is factory OC'd) has a power consumption of:

Idle --------------------- : 19w
Max usage(with FURMARK) : 212w

My current PSU is ASUS A-55GA, 550w max output(which currently supports my Ati X1900xt)

Will this PSU be sufficient for this video card??

PSU ASUS A-55GA specs:
+3.3V -30A
+5V -28A
+12V1 -18A
+12V2 -18A
-12V -1A
+5VSB -2A
Dual 6 pin PCI-Express connectors

Other INFO:
PC has Q6600 CPU(stock speed), ASUS P5K Deluxe MB, 3 HDD, 1 DVD ROM,

Any help is appreciated!

The OE is from AcBel. It's a bit meh on performance being that the 12V rails are rated to only 360W and apparently voltage regulation isn't great under heavy load. It's a bit optimistic to call it a 550W supply, more like 450 in the real world. Still, it should be enough for that system if there is no overclocking.

1. It could be either but I wouldn't be surprised to find it is the power supply. You need to isolate the problem by either testing the system with a better power supply or a known working graphics card with similar power characteristics. I would start with the power supply.

2. No power consumption of the card does not vary with fan speed, although the fan will consume a little more power at 100%! You did the right thing increasing the fan speed to rule out overheating of the card.

Good luck and let us know how you get on next.

My vote is also for the PSU. Maybe you can try to do some more troubleshooting by disconnecting power to all drives but the boot drive, disconnecting all case fans (leave side off computer and point a desk fan at it) and underclocking/undervolting your CPU a bit. That should lower the power demands without doing any changes to the graphics card or changing the PSU. If it magically works, or even lasts substantially longer in Furmark (since you get fastest results in it) then you have your answer.
