I am thinking of upgrading my system:
from:
asus a7v8x-e
amd 1500xp athlon
kingston 512 ram

to:
asus a8v DLX
amd athlon 64 3800+ venice
kingston 1 gb ddr 400

and my nec dvd burner, 200gb hd 7200rpm, ati 9800 pro 128mb and case will be swapped...

total for the upgrade is 620

about 110 for motherboard, 366 for processor and rest for the ram... I was wondering if it was a good motherboard and if any parts I should consider changing or adding to make this better my price ceiling is about 650. Thanks. Also would I need to purchase XP 64 bit to make the most of this system?

I have the Asus A8V and I'm happy with it. I've overclocked my 3000+ winchester up to 2.4 ghz easily with the board. Some people have reported problems, but to be honest there will be more reported problems with the popular boards than others because more people are using them.
You can't go wrong with that processor, but if you're planning on overclocking you can go with a 3700+ San Diego core for around the same amount of money. The Venice overclocks too. Either way, they're both great processors.

I wouldn't worry about buying xp 64 yet. Stick with winxp sp2.

i also like my a8v dlx, but i sometimes wish i had gotten something better. go for a dfi ultra d, a venice 3200 or 3000 and the most expensive video card you can aford after that probably a 6800gt, or x800xl. good vid card makes the most difference in gaming, you will be gaming right? otherwise the system you have planned is very good, except get a 3700 san diego instead. for the ram, get some corsair twinx1024-3200c2pt.

3800 is too much, step that down and get a better vid card

agreed, sell the 9800.

get a 3500+ and use the funds from the 9800+ and the cpu downgrade to get the 6800GT/X800Xl
