some light gaming, 2nd internet machine, OCing, general abuse. Maybe a dumb question but I've always ran AMD and thus have no experience with Intel and how fast they are, advantages/disadvantages etc........What's your pick?

Is the AMD chip an Althon XP, Sempron, or A64?? Actualy in any case, I would go with the AMD over the 2.53ghz P4 since it's a 533mhz FSB chip with no Hyperthreading.

Barton = Athlon XP (final rev with 512kB cache). Should be the better choice for OP's usage. Unlikely to OC beyond 2.3GHz, so if serious cooling is available the P4 may give better results when OC-ed.

Tough choice - they are both mediocre processors. A better choice for a cheap system would be a 64-bit Sempron. In any case, here is a link to an old Anandtech article, comparing against older Athlon XP's. The 2800+ Barton will be faster than the Athlons shown in this article, and if you scale up, it looks like the Athlon will be the faster chip - an will probably use less power as well.

Here's an article by Anandtech comparing the XP3200,2600 vs P4 3.2 GHz (&2.53GHz etc)
Note that the XP2800 shown in that article is the vapourware Thoroughbred B core version of the XP2800.

Agreed ,IF the P4 could be clocked to ~3GHz then it would be the faster chip ,but I don't know how likely that is ,anyone else know?

The XP will be faster without overclocking. However, when comparing 2800+ rating to top processor today at 6000+ and more with overclocking, it's unlikely you'll feel much of a difference. If a task will be cpu limited, both rigs will be pretty slow compared to today's mid-range system even.

On average to get P4 speed from Core 2 Duo for example it's 90-100% of performance increase per clock cycle. So a 2.66ghz Core 2 Duo is about as fast as a dual core P4 5.0ghz-5.3ghz. Maybe you should save up a little and get AM2 with X2 3600+ and overclock that to 2.4-2.5ghz.

If you get lucky & can get the Barton to 2.4ghz it'll be faster then even a 3ghz P4 but unless you get a hefty HS/fan to cool it, you may burn it up.

Or tell us about the rest of the system (mostly motherboard/chipsets).

It's just from extra parts; a thrasher. . . and the choices are: Socket A Board 1, ASRock k7s41gx; Board 2, ASRock K7VM3; Socket 478 board 1, M952 (pcchips); Board 2 ECS PT800CE-A
