I m working on a friend's computer. Rather Old one at that Dell 166, When I first got it the fan on the pwr supply was not turning . So Naturally I changed it out. Got a new one, and this pwer supplies fan is also not turning, What would the chances be that this pwr supply is bad too? Or am I over Looking SOMETHING??

THANKS

I know with newer Dell's, you cannot use any standard power supplies. Trust me, I learned the hard way and fried the mobo. You have to get a PSU from Dell.

you can check to see if it uses the custom dell PS.
simply look at the NEW PS's atx connector (the one that goes in the mobo) and look at the old dell ps atx connector.

this sounds dumb, but check the colors of the wires going into the respected place on the atx connecter, if they are different, then you need a dell PS.

also, crack open another box, and test the new psu in there, to see if it works

goodluck

Depending on how you value your time and the cost of parts, it may not be worth putting much time into an old Dell 166. That said, I am not sure if you mean the supply isn't doing anything. Are any LED's lit on the machine? If not, it sounds like you may have a bad power switch which is much cheaper than a supply.

If you know what you're doing, unplug the machine, and measure the contacts with an ohm meter to see if they open and close in the two positions. A local electronic store would probably be a cheaper place to find a replacement than getting it from Dell.

Good luck. :)
