Alright, so, I've done a good bit of searching on this, but I've come up empty handed for the most part.
If I watch a video on YouTube, and then click on a link to another video, my 2nd monitor flickers once or twice. And when I say flicker, I don't mean it turns off and on, but thin black bars/artifacts run the entire length of the monitor real quick, and then it's back to normal.

I'm certain it's not my cables or monitors, because everything worked fine with my old HD4870.

I'm using the latest ATI drivers, I've tried disabling ATI overdrive, but nothing seems to correct it.

Anybody else experiencing this? I know quite a few of us here just bought some HD5870s due to the thread in the Hot Deals forum (http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2145535), so maybe you guys can chime in with your findings?

It's not a serious issue, just really annoying. I've searched high and low, but can't seem to find a solution that works. Perhaps I'll post a video of it when I get out of work.

ATi drivers ftl,

there is a way to change the idle speeds of your card in an editor, i found it before and had to do so on my 5870 to enable both eyefinity and overdrive.

also have you tried turning off flash acceleratoin

Not to worry, that flickering in multi-monitor mode is a known issue.

It's caused by the video card changing memory frequencies when it goes from 2D mode to video mode. The 2D mode can get away with using lower frequencies to save power and heat, so it saves you money.

You can continue putting up with it, or you can override your 2D video memory speeds to use a higher speed. That will use a bit more power, but may be worth it.

Single-monitor mode won't show this issue, because less demands are put on the video card when only one monitor is used. But for multi-monitor, you may want to consider bumping up the memory speeds so that they don't change based on what mode the card is in.

You could try asking the card manufacturer for a new bios that includes higher memory clocks, or you could modify a copy of your own bios to bump up the 2D clocks. There are tools to modify video card bioses, I can't remember the name.

If all your video memory clocks are the same between the 2D, video, and 3D modes of the video card, then they won't have to be changed and you won't see the flicker.
