Question 2nd M.2 NVMe SSD not recognized on Maximus XI Hero

I have a new PC with a Maximus XI Hero motherboard (which has two M.2 slots), and two 2TB M.2 NVMe SSDs (one by PNY, one XPG Gammix).

Sometimes, one of the SSDs (so far it's been the XPG sitting on the northern slot) is not recognized. Not by BIOS, not by Windows Disk Management.

When this happens, I can try removing and reinserting the SSDs, and generally after doing so it does recognize both.

But after a few resets, it reverts to recognizing only one of them.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this, and how it can be resolved?

Also, what are the chances that things will be better if I get an M.2->PCIe adapter card, and connect the SSD to a PCIe slot instead of the dedicated M.2 slot?

Thanks.

For reference, here are the full specs:

You should have no problems using the dedicated M.2 slots. If you changed nothing and it keeps dropping one from your devices list either the MB is defective or the SSD. My guess is the MB since removing and replacing brings it back. Check for bios updates and see if that fixes the problem.

Do you have any drives at SATA port G_2? (refer to your manual for the port)
It may cause you these problems.

From the specs page of Asus.
"When the M.2_1 Socket 3 is operating in SATA mode, SATA6G_2 port will be disabled."
