2nd IDE channel issues

Hi everyone-

I just recently moved my 48x CD-Rom drive from the slave on my primary IDE channel to the master on my 2nd IDE channel. Nothing was there before.

However, the Drive is not showing up. Hell, in the system window, even the channel itself is not showing up.

My specs (or some of them):

Pentium 2- 350
160MB RAM
Windows 2000
48x CD-ROM drive

If I left anything out, just tell me.
Any ideas?

This may be a stupid question.

Did you change the BIOS? So the computer would look for a drive on the second channel.

Are you sure you want to know?

If you make a mistake you could cause more problems than you have now.
If you can get someone to show you how.

If so read on.

1. Restart your computer.
2. As it is restarting you should see "press DEL to enter setup" (note: instead of "DEL" it may be "CTRL F1" or "CTRL BREAK") Press it.
3. Go to "STANDARD CMOS SETUP" Press "Enter"
4. Use arrow key down to "SECONDARY MASTER"
5. Use "Page up" or "Page down" to change to "AUTO"
6. Then press "ECSAPE"
7. Go to "Save & Exit Setup" then Press "Enter"
8. Press the "Y" key to confirm
9. Then Press "Enter"
10. Your computer should restart.

Good Luck

With all due respect to Kwatt That won't be necessary for an ATAPI CD-ROM drive, however, I believe he was on the right track. First, make certain that the cable is seated properly and oriented correctly on both the mobo and CD-ROM. Next, depending on your mobo and bios there will be a section in the bios named integrated peripherals or features setup for instance in which the preferences for the on-board IDE controllers can be set. Your bios may have only the primary IDE channel enabled, so you would need to enable the secondary IDE controller. If necessary browse through every catagory in the bios until you locate the on-board PCI info. Let us know how your making out.

Question: Did you build this system yourself?

If so you may want to make sure that none of the standoffs are shorting the motherboard.

This happend to me a while back. Nothing showed at post. Not even that there was a secondary IDE channel present. I tried everything even making changes in the BIOS but no go. Finally I took out the motherboard and found that I had put a standoff where one was not needed. ooops...was kinda in a rush at the time.

Fortunately nothing major happend. I managed to reinstall & reboot the computer and bingo! it was there.

😱 oops

DAPUNISHER

I should have thought of that.
Someone gave me a MBoard last year because the 2nd IDE channel wasn't working. It was disabled.😀

DAPUNISHER is correct:
