OK! My problem......I have MSI k7t turbo MOBO. With the Raid option. I had big problems last week. Anyway I succeded in reinstalling W2K,doing Fdisk,partitioning etc etc. Which was a 1st & a big achievement for me considering that I come from Apple background. Anyway everything is ok now apart from-
As things stand I have *CDburner *Zip *CD ROM and * HD occuping the 2IDE slots.
I also have 2blue coloured IDE looking slots. I guess these are the ATA100 slots for the raid option. Now I don't want Raid. I just want to install a new 2nd HD. I tried connecting my current HD to this blue connector. I was not able to boot from it. Is it possible to connect the HD's to these blue ATA 100 slots without setting up raid??
 
How can I connect a 2nd HD if I don't use the Raid IDE slots. Is there any way I can connect more than 4 devices to the 2 IDE slots. I want to use the 2nd HD to backup my design work.

No, you can only have two devices on one IDE channel. You can use the RAID socket as if it is another IDE channel, it doesn't have to be in an array. That's how I have mine.
 
So why doesn't my PC boot from the HD when I connect to the
Raid IDE channel?? I get the error boot up device was not found.....
 
You need to go into the BIOS setup for the system, and tell it to boot from the ATA100RAID
controller. Otherwise it will try to boot from the regular controller, and you no longer have
the drive attached there.

I don't see the boot froma ATA 100raid controller anywhere. I will check again in the BIOS.
Question1*. If I leave the current HD attached to the normal IDE channel. And connect the new (to be purchased HD) to the Raid IDE slot will that solve the problem??
Question2* I have the 2 IDE slots next to that I have another slot where the floppy drive connects. Is it possible to connect the Zip drive to that slot?? Just curious🙂
 
Another question- Can I connect other devices like Zip,CD rOM etc to the RAID IDE slot or does it have to be HD only?????
 
Yes, you should can connect the new hard drive to the ATA channel, but you shouldn't have any problems doing the same thing with your boot drive. And no, you can't connect your Zip Drive to the floppy connector.

By the way, did you see my post above and try what it says?
 
Shooter- Setting the HD as slave. That means I have to take the little tab out from the back of the HD. I am slightly confused. On the backk of my 40GB 60GXP IBM HD. I have 2 white tabs and 4 pin things.
:::: Right now its on normal IDE channel set up as Master- and it looks like this- * from the side where the electric cable goes in*- : tab : tab
How should I arrange the 2white tabs to make it slave???
 
Shooters- in my BIOS under the 1st boot device I have the following options-
Floopy,LS 120, HDD-0, SCSI, CDROM, HDD-1, HDD-2, HDD-3. Which should I choose when my present HD gets connected to the Raid IDE slot as slave??
 
Are you using the K7T turbo w raid?

In bios you should have boot order scsi.

Above that you should have promise/scsi

you maybe should have boot from other device enabled.

I only have one drive hooked to my Raid and I have it set as master on IDE 3

When you boot up and it goes past the first part of the post screen another comes up and it will say something like to enter fast raid display press ctrl 7 or something or other. You need to do that and then add your drive to the array.

After that it will reboot and it should detect the drive after the first post screen.


Note that which bios version you are using might call for different promise raid controller drivers. Check msi's site and see if you have the ones for your bios version.

That's weird that right now your jumpers are configured the way they are. If I understand you picture correctly, your drive is actually set to cable select mode and not master. Anyway, to set the drive to slave, you have to move the jumpers (the white tabs) so that they cover the A,B and C,D pins on the back of the hard drive. Make sure you place each one vertically and not horizontally. Look at this page to see what I'm talking about.

As for the boot sequence, it's hard for me to say since I've never owned that motherboard and I'm just going off what the online manual says. When they say HDD 0, HDD 1, HDD 2, and HDD 3, I'm really sure if they're talking about IDE channels or the hard drives themselves. My guess is that those settings aren't in reference to the ATA/100 RAID channels. What I recommend you do is just leave all the boot sequence stuff at their default settings. What your computer does is go through all the devices you've specified in your boot sequence until it finds a device that it can boot from. If it can't boot from a specific device, it will simply move to the next device until it runs out of devices, which is obviously what's happenning to you. Try setting the drive to the slave setting, connect it to the ATA/100 channel, and try to boot. If it doesn't work, then we'll try to figure something else out.

Oh yeah, do what Blain suggested and check to see if there is a jumper on the motherboard that enables/disables the RAID fuction of those ATA/100 channels.
 
There isn't a jumper for enableing and disableing the raid. There was a hacked bios floating around, but I would be scared to mess with it.

You also need to set the drive up in the raid fast build utility that I mentioned earlier.

you shold have two user manuals with that mother board one for the board itself and another for the raid set up procedures.

Is it better to have HD + zip together on IDE1 & CD-ROM + Burner on IDE2
OR
HD + burner on IDE1 & Zip +Burner on IDE2.
 
I had trouble getting my. Western Digital hard drive recognized at first, but the bios update fixed it for me. If you flash your bios don't forget the updated raid drivers.

I would go with ide 1 hard drive - cdrom

ide2 cdrw and zip.
