2nd Experience with Windows 8

I explained to my mother who only uses browser and email about how to use Windows 8 changing from Windows 7 in about 2 minutes with the quick Winkey shortcuts and corners.

Agree entirely. Will also add that I personally am not a fan of relying heavily on keyboard shortcuts, because I still remember the pre-GUI days when you had to have a crib sheet with a long list of them for your editor or other software. Been there once, was glad to move on.

Its curious how many unreasoned and rather pointless posts there are on both sides on this topic though. Some of the pro-8 posts read like bland generic marketing speak ('takes the user interface to the next level'), while, to be fair, there are also uselessly non-specific posts from haters ('it sucks!' 'one device doesn't have good drivers yet, so win8 is rubbish and always will be').

If we were dealing with a lesser (or much smaller) company than MS I'd have suspected the former of being actual shills - but I don't think for a moment that sort of shilling is MS's style. They play ruthlessly but, not in that low-rent cheap-ass way (other companies however...). Instead, its as if people somehow absorb marketing-speak cliches and then regurgitate them. Perhaps just in reaction to the more extreme anti-8 posts?

I disagree again about keyboard shortcuts,I don't use any for Win8,once you have it customized to your personal needs its just a click or two at most,only time I use keyboard is for typing,gaming.

I'll say everybody is entitled to their opinion and that includes pro Win8 users,you got to be fair on both sides,having said that I still don't understand most of the issues some people have with Win8,maybe its because I was use to DOS 6.22 so find any Windows OS a piece of cake to use or maybe its because I can be bothered to learn any new OS and that includes a few Linux Distro's as well,my point is Win8 is not hard to use and is efficient for daily use IMHO,again I don't use a touchscreen or keyboard shortcuts as a desktop user/gamer.

Win8 is quite customizable even for desktop etc..


I almost wish I could send some of you back to DOS 6.22 days lol...nowadays users have it too easy on any Windows OS and that includes Win7,8 etc...

End of the day Win8 is solid,fast and just works,sure they changed a few things added Metro etc..but what you guys expect to stay with Win7 UI forever?...that's like me saying stay with DOS 6.22 we don't need anything else...Right now Win8 is cheaper then 7 and has a lot more features so again I don't see the problem with Win8.

Issues I can understand is software incompatibility and drivers,this happens on every new Windows OS so nothing new there,however most get sorted quickly,personally not effected by these.

Once you get past the fact the start menu is now full screen. The OS is fine. Still dont want to deploy it in the office. But really it isnt bad.

People crowing on like they're some kind of geniuses for figuring out how to use a web browser, email, facebook or whatever other tinkering they're doing miss the point. It's not about being "hard to use" or figure out.

A computer chock full of viruses can be 'easy to use'. Just work around all the crap the viruses are doing that benefit the virus designer but not the computer user. But see, here's the thing, and let this sink in for a minute: I PREFER NOT TO.

Just as I prefer not to use a computer with an OS with a lot of rotten UI design tacked on that's more geared to benefit the OS maker, not the user. Get it? I'm sure many of the shills probably still won't.

Honestly for older people it may not be appealing. For everyone else it's not rocket science. For many it's not the preferred windows we were used to. Oh well you get used to it just like anything else. I got sick of the iPhone os how it didn't change until iPhone 5. I'm much happier with my android roms that I can customize

I installed it on my wife's laptop.. She hasn't complained (much) but hasn't said anything good about it either.

I have heard so far "too complicated" then "too simple",then its "for older people" then young,"you need a touchscreen" etc....over 90% of it is crap,its like the anti-8 posters want to post any crap because then have nothing better to do,my point about DOS 6.22 if you can understand, was I adjusted to every OS Microsoft made after,ie from DOS to Windows then virtually every release,I also adjusted to Linux,when I was at school we did not have computers etc so everything I picked up was the hard way if you get my meaning,now Win8 is not hard to learn.

I can understand people not liking the look of UI etc since that's really a preference thing but end of the day there is nothing really wrong with Win8,if you don't like it fine why post crap about it,it serves no purpose unless you can make a constructive post about it(even if its negative),rather then the vague and FUD comments I've heard from most anti-8 posters.

Even some members have posted crap about it without even trying it,now that says it all.

Ironically this seems to happen everytime Microsoft release a new OS,wonder what crap I will hear on Win9.

As for forcing you,you've Linux you have older Windows operating systems,nobody is forcing you,you can always wait for Win9 ,10 etc...especially if Microsoft go on a yearly change.

Over the decades of market dominance, MS has built an army of "supporters" who make a living by using/selling/teaching/fixing its products. It does not need a "Shills" operation because those who rely on MS for living (directly or indirectly) will speak out voluntarily.

Why the defensive sneering at anyone who has different priorities and likes/dislikes to yourself? I find comments like yours to be very odd.

Personally I don't much care for keyboard shortcuts. For me, I remember when GUIs first appeared and how nice it was to get away from such things.

Your milage may vary (and, yeah, for certain sorts of repetitive tasks keyboard shortcuts can actually be more efficient). But please accept not everyone has the same tastes as you do.

Your comment about 'whine and bitch' makes it sound like you are emotionally invested in MS products, as if they are some part of your identity and it upsets you that someone else finds one of them less-than-perfect for their purposes. I assume you didn't mean it to sound like that.

And as for 'don't get the difficulty' - its not about 'difficulty', its about some aspects of win8 being slightly more awkward for many users than the old way. Nobody says its too hard to understand, its just slightly inferior in smoothness and ease-of-use (depending, of course, on what you are using it for).

I'll say seems more noises from Anti-8 users then other forums I've been too at other sites,but that means nothing.
As to design of UI that comes and goes with Microsoft and is a preference thing,personally as long as the OS is solid and everything is within two clicks for my needs,easy to customize as well, I have no issues with that.

As to your poor statement of "butt-hurt" I can take or leave Win8,its just one of many operating systems I use,however I'll say Win8 in some ways is now boring to me,rock stable,easy to use,even been beta testing Firefall in Win8 again no issues ,looks like it just a solid OS for my needs so far .

Roll on Win9 I look forward to playing with that oh and the next lot of anti-9 whiners lol....
