Just letting everybody know of a website where you can help individuals in need in your local area: 2hands.org. It's a legit site, been featured in the news and seems to be growing in popularity.
I've helped one person so far through it, a local elderly lady going through tough times needed some financial assistance and I was able to lend a hand. I only wish I could do more for more people on there, but it's a good start for me in fulfilling a life-long dream of philanthropy.
And the good thing is you can meet/talk to the person you're looking at helping out, which lets you get an idea as to who they are and whether they're likely sincere in their request or just trying to exploit you.
