2H, 3H, 9H... what's the difference?

Some monitors have a coating of 2H, some 3H, and others 9H. What are the differences?

I know that some monitors are really grainy looking, others are really clear looking, and some are in between.

Does a 2H clear panel have more glare or less glare than a clear panel that's listed as higher than 2H?
