Another question does nf4 mobo support dual channel for 2x 1Gb DDRram.......i was told that some boards do not.

lol reguarding the FEAR post.....i'm not a avid FPS fan....so i guess 6600DDR2 should suffice for most RTS,MMORPG's.
Is an opteron165 better than an x2 4200?

Yep, NF4 supports dual channel with 2x1gb sticks. I have 2x1gb of OCZ platinum with mine. Operteron 165 is only better than the 4200+ if you plan on overclocking, as the opterons tend to get a higher average overclock. My 4200+ is running at 2.618ghz.

Somewhere in the world, an English teacher just shot himself in the head.

With that being said, I suggest going for 2gb.

I have 2 gigs in my A64 system.. WoW has no lag at all even in IF full of people..
the extra gig definatly helps performance i dont hear the hard drive crunching as much as it used to with 1 gig.

QFT. My system uses 930MB of RAM at idle. Of course, I run Server 2003 + Exchange 2003. :) And yes, I do play games on it. They co-exist very well with everything else. Specs in my sig.

This really made my morning... truer words were never articulated.

Anyhow, 2x1GB and get a 7800GT if you can. The 6800 will be no good with FEAR... I'm running a 7800GT and a lesser overall system than the one you're building and I have settings maxed with FPS (frames per second, not first person shooter) hovering around 45.

Your games that you mentioned wont need 2 gigs. Heck, I think they would be fine with 512mb.

Photoshop will benifit by 2gb of ram ONLY if you are opening really large images or many small images.

I would NOT reccomend doing this. If you run 2x512 in dual channel and you upgrade to 2GB (by adding another 2x512) you will be using 4 sticks- causing the ram to slow down significantly!

Go with 2GB, I've seen value ram as low as $99 AR. Even if you want the good stuff, G.Skill extreme is only $197 on newegg.

where can i get 2 gb for 99. i just ordered 512 x 2 corsair VS for 100.

that true. windows is the reall ram hog. i run ubuntu with 256 mb ram and never needed more than 500 mb swao even during the most intense gimp sessions.

edit.
to the op. more ramis always good. get as much as you can. but if you are worried abot over kill then get 1 gb (only 1 stick) now then if you see page file being used a lot then get more.

Go with 2 gigs and still keep the 6800GS. You could also get X850XT for $218 on Newegg in PCIe. If you need to save some $, save it on the cpu. Get X2 3800+ or Opteron 165. You are paying $100 extra for 4200+ which gives 5% improvement.

Should i go With 2gigs or 1gig of ram?

I typically use my rig for photoshop and some video editing. I do ocassionally game bit mostly WoW,Civ4 etc. I do multi-task quite a lot and run several BT's most of the time.

Pls advice, thanks in advance

Here's what decided to build:
A64x2 4200+
DFI lanparty Ultra-D non SLI
1 or 2 Gigs of RAM in dual channel (still deciding)
XFX GeForce 6800GS or 6600DDR2
Maxtor or WD 250Gb SataII HDD
OCZ powerstream 420W psu

*will this be able to handle FEAR at a reasonable frame rate ? @say 1280x1024 AA/AF on?*

2 gigs, without a doubt. even if you don't need it now, you will later and prices are very cheap atm.

and yes, your rig should handle fear very nicely with the additional gig

yea.. the stuff you listed wont need 2gb, you wont notice any differemce. prob milliseconds. spend the extra $80-100 on a hard drive of a faster cpu for overall performance.

I'd suggest the 2gb. It's funny, seems that 1.5 seems to be the sweet spot, but then you can't run dual channel. Such a waste.

Sure you can. 512mb x 2 + 256x2 = dual channel. But getting 256mb sticks, even 512mb sticks...gonna be hard to get rid of them later. Or if you need to get 2 gigs, you'll basically have to toss the 2x256.

I'm pretty sure FEAR needs 2GB of RAM. OCZ PSU's are overpriced, so you could shave off some money by getting a nice Fortron. Photoshop is also very RAM hungry. I believe DDR prices will rise, with DDR2 becoming more popular, especially with the release of Socket AM2. Get 2x1GB now.

Get the best you can afford. Personally I would put as much money into the video card as possible. If that means getting 1GB of memory instead of 2 I say do it. Don't listen to what anyone says about the whole 1T 2T thing. On an A64 timings make very little difference. Video card and CPU Mhz are king. Of course if you can get 2GB of RAM and a better video card that would obviously be best.

Get the 6800GS, it should handle FEAR decently at lower resolutions. 2GB of ram if your doing fairly complicated things with photoshop. 1GB if it's more basic things.

I recent upgraded my desktop to 2GB, and aside from a few instances in EQ2 and BF2, I can't tell the difference. I'm sure that once Vista hits the streets, 2GB will become more desireable, but for now, I'd save some money and stick with 1GB.
