Hi guys I'm think of building my new system from my bonus pay.
Should i go With 2gigs or 1gig of ram?

I typically use my rig for photoshop and some video editing. I do ocassionally game bit mostly WoW,Civ4 etc. I do multi-task quite a lot and run several BT's most of the time.

Pls advice, thanks in advance

Here's what decided to build:
A64x2 4200+
DFI lanparty Ultra-D non SLI
1 or 2 Gigs of RAM in dual channel (still deciding)
XFX GeForce 6800GS or 6600DDR2
Maxtor or WD 250Gb SataII HDD
OCZ powerstream 420W psu

*will this be able to handle FEAR at a reasonable frame rate ? @say 1280x1024 AA/AF on?*

I would go with 2. Photoshop will love you. There are a few games out now that use more than 1gb *although none that you mentioned*, I would imagine this trend is going to continue in 2006.

Ehh depends go with a dual channel 1G at first and see if thats good enough results for you and ask yourself does the slight improvment justify the cost. Photoshop is helped by 2G while none of those games are.

If you do Photoshop and video editing, I think it's a good idea to go with 2GB.

future proofing is for idiots, u can always get 1gb now and maybe get anothet 1gb later on when the price drops or when u need it

So you're saying it would be better to get 2x512 DC now, then run 4x512 @2T later? Great idea. Or how about 1x1GB no DC now?

OP should get the 2x1gb now. For photoshop, and gaming.

I would NOT reccomend doing this. If you run 2x512 in dual channel and you upgrade to 2GB (by adding another 2x512) you will be using 4 sticks- causing the ram to slow down significantly!

Go with 2GB, I've seen value ram as low as $99 AR. Even if you want the good stuff, G.Skill extreme is only $197 on newegg.

Forgot to mention, for FEAR make sure to turn off the shadows. They look ugly and they are where you will waste the most amount of your system resources.

ok. get 1gb now if u really dont need 2gb. then later on when applications require it and prices drop then get another 1gb.

or lets all just future proof our machines and get 5tb storage just incase you'll need it in the future and get 8gb ram just incase we'll need it. gg

2GB is hardly "future proofing." 1GB of RAM is not very hard to eat through anymore.

OP you will thank yourself later, go for 2GB.

I've started with 3GB and then went with 2GB on my 64bit video rig. I used the other 1GB on another machine. I didn't need more on my video rig as I thought. I have 1GB on my other rig that I run PhotoShop and it works fine. My new 64bit Linux machine runs 1 GB which really is too much. 512mb is plenty for FC4.

Not really, the 6800GS might get around 45-50 fps with no AA/AF and the 6600DDR2 isn't even worth mentionining in the same sentence as FEAR. Step up to a 7800GT if you want to play that game. Or lower your resolution and drop the AA/AF requirements.

Thanks for the advice guys.......i think i'll most probably go with the 2Gig...
more ram is always better rite?
Another question does nf4 mobo support dual channel for 2x 1Gb DDRram.......i was told that some boards do not.

lol reguarding the FEAR post.....i'm not a avid FPS fan....so i guess 6600DDR2 should suffice for most RTS,MMORPG's.
Is an opteron165 better than an x2 4200?
