1280x1024 is a really high resolution to run games on, especially on an older video card. Try 1024x768. That should help a lot.
 
7800 GT, or used 6800 GT.

Since you don't play BF2 or WoW, you don't need more than a GB of RAM.

Later on, you will.

My advice is: "If you are happy with your system, don't upgrade, but if you aren't, then get a 7800 GT."
 
he's on an agp platform. he'll have to find a used 6800 gt, but I would recommend that he waits 2 months and picks up a 6800GS when they become available.
 
Just to be sure we sound like a broken record, I'll chime in as well. Unless you're playing Battlefield 2 or such, upgrading RAM is not the problem. A better graphics card is needed.
 
You asked for advice, people are giving you advice. Maybe you payed an assload for your 9800XT 2 years ago, but today, it's nowhere near top of the line. And that's whats holding you back.
