hey guys,

Simple question for you fellas. I've got an Abit AV8 motherboard and I was originally planning on using 1 gigabyte OCZ Plat rev. 2 (512mb x2) in dual channel mode. Looks like I may have a little extra money and I have considered stepping up to 2gb RAM but I won't be able to get 1gb sticks of OCZ ram for dual channel mode. I'm not really comfortable running four 512 stick either, just sounds like trouble.

Obviously this is going to cost twice as much and I may put the money towards a new monitor instead.
1gb is obviously fantastic in a system but i'm just curious if the 2gb is going to give me THAT much gain. Sometimes I host lan games on the same machine i'm playing on but I don't know, lag isn't an issue even when hosting. I don't know if it is going to be worth it unless i'm doing something besides gaming like video editing or something

please inform me

Thanks

No, not unless your doing lots of photoshop, 3ds max and the likes, not very useful at all.

Thanks SOB. That is what I figured. I don't use any of that stuff and if I do it isn't hardcore use like would require the extra memory.

Perhaps the next computer I build (in a few years) will have 2gb when games and such start needing it.

thank you

I would definately stay with 1gb, giving up dual channel and going from 1T to 2T command rate will cause a performance decrease. 2gb isn't worth it unless your in a server environment and the load conditions are causing your memory to cache to HDD frequently. And most current applications don't even fully utilize 1gb.

In the future 64bit OS's and App's may exceed the need for 1gb. Hopefully by then they will also have mfg'd dual channel 1gb modules with decent timings, and or the chipset will support running 4 sticks with decent timings at 1T
