right im considering a little upgrade again (jus moved to 7800's in SLI :D) now i was originally planning on scooping up another gig o ram a soon as my 6800GT sells. but then i stopped for a moment and thought.......do i actually need another gig?

i know BF2 practically begs for 2Gb to run smoothe, but as im at uni at the mo, that game has to take the side lines.....i cant play BF2 on a lousy 2mb connection that proivdes PINGS AS LOW AS 250ms!!!!!!!!

sh!!!!ttty ADSL

Aside from BF2....any other games that require a Gig +?

if not, then anohter gig just isnt worth my while....ill get something else instead

to actually use your 2x7800's you will need sli, look at the little site i put up to keep my machine under 1GB as far as settings/resolution, and you can easily play it on max everything therefore almost requiring 2GB. at one point i had hit 1.4GB, but didn't take a screen shot of the settings therefore that part was omitted.

and you should be able to get a better ping than 250ms with a 2Mb/s dsl, are you really far from the connection point (as in where the phone connects to its equipment in the ground), are you using a wireless setup? i try to play on servers that are 100ms or less but i can get better pings than that from Arizona in the U.S. (western state) to Australia....

not sure i understand your first line......ill need SLI to actually use my 2x7800s? well yeah i kinda guessed lol, i figured you meant something else though

i live in the UK, so all our ADSL goes through bog standard British Telecom copper wires which have been there god knows how long. im guessing the line quality is very ropey...and the fact that Tiscali rent the line off of BT probably doesnt help. my requests have to go a long long way before they actually get sent. its adequate for web browsing at speed, but naff for games.

its 2mb connection...now at home, i have NTL and they run a coax cable serivce. i get the full 2mbps day in day out. this ADSL is bollocks.....im getting 56k speeds one minute..then just over 1mbps the next. totally unreliable.

i think i may scrap another gig, and get a nice new wireless mouse :D

2 GB of RAM for a FPS?? that's just insane... there is no game that requires that much RAM for it's textures yet, or it would say so on the box.

Edit: The only game I know of that is ****** with less than a gig of RAM no matter what is World of Warcraft.
Edit2:
If you can't get anything lower than 250 ms on any server with DSL, I would switch providers. I've gotten better on dial up.

BF2 with all the whistles going can and does consume upto 1.5gb

this is 64 player of course, full dynamic shadows and lighting, high settings for everything....and ive got SLI so lashings of AA and AF are abound too

shame its unplayable on this NAFF connection

Is it necessary? Probably not... but I'm thinking about adding a second gigabyte of RAM to my system anyway, because 1GB is starting to feel a bit tight when having Firefox open and then launching a game, among other things... Plus it's relatively inexpensive these days (at least compared to the $185 I paid for 2x512MB PC3200 in the FS/T forums here two years ago...)

yes, total brand fart...i meant to say to fully utilize your 2x7800gts you will need 2GB since you can run at such extreme resolutions/quality settings.

yes you do and bf2 is the first one i know of, even at 1280x960 6AA, everything on high. since the op he can probably run easily at 1600x1200 or 1920x1440 with all on high making 2GB a necessity, sad but true.

the information i put up is accurate for my system, showing that you don't need an uber fast cpu to play it, as it is more gpu dependent but showing that the days of 1GB being the uber elite are gone.

yes, I play combat flight sims like Ms Combat FS3 and Pacific Fighters, I will personally vouch for having 2 gigs of ram making an immense inprovement in how the game loads, plays and exits out...I used to exit out of PF and for a good 20 seconds my screen was black, then one by one, my desktop items would reappear...also the load times on the games dropped drastically...I will not build anymore gamer machines without at least 2 gigs of dual channel ram:)
