i am starting to look for 2gb of ram, specifacally ones with low latencies as i am a gamer and dont want to sacrifice much compared to my TCCD ram i have now. ocz seems to be the only company to make 2gb dual channel ram that can run at 2-3-2-5

OCZ Platinum 2gb dual channel kit

any reviews on ram or personal experience or other suggestions on ram are welcome and thank you ahead of time!

I can't offer you any personal experience of the OCZ ram but I think it's the stuff I'm going to plump for as well.

I'm looking for the absolutely ideal (well, as ideal as possible) setup for my new AMD x2 4400+, Asus A8N-SLi Premium and BFG GeForce 7800GTX. I was planning to stick with my 1GB (2x512mb) of Mushkin PC3500 lvl2, as it cost a fortune a few years ago and makes use of the ultra fast Winbond BH-5 chips. From what I've read on these forums I think I might be better to replace it with 2GB (1GBx2) of OCZ Platinum 3200. I'm spending a shed load of cash upgrading so I don't mind spending a bit more to get the best; if the OCZ stuff is the best?

I'm assuming games like BF2, HL2 and EverQuest2 will run faster with 2GB OCZ at 2-3-3-5 than with 1GB of Mushkin at 2-2-2-5? Thanks for your opinions. :)

Ram is severely overhyped. Youd get better bang for your buck selling your 6800GT and getting a 7800GTX, and getting 2GB of value ram.

Edit: youre looking at about 2-4% from going from value ram to what you linked, for a 90% price increase. A 7800GTX on valueram would give you a good 30-110%.

Corsair has some nice 2GB sets that run at 2-3-2-8. Newegg has a special for them too. 2GB in dual channel for 226$ and free shipping.

You are right, OCZ is making the best 1GB DIMMs on the market (in that package).

I have that exact RAM and it's amazing. I can even run it at 2-2-2-5 @1T without any problems. Do yourself a favor and BUY THAT KIT!

In fact you could probably overclock the value RAM to compensate for the default difference? Yeah I'm sort of a hypocrite. ;)

If you want to spend money Crucial Ballistix will beat those OCZ - some people have got 2.5-2-2 at 250mhz 1T and 2.8V ...

course you could just get the value 1GB sticks which are just speed binned Ballistic and stand a good chance of getting something like 2.5-2-2 at DDR400 or 3-3-3 at DDR500 or just shy off (DDR480)

Your choice

Crucial are very good though

truly you guys are WASTING YUOR MONEY I dont know how many times we need to say this. . THE AMD64 IS NOT AFFECTED BY MEMORY LATENCY BY ANY NOTICIBLE AMOUNT. the difference between 2-2-2-5 and 3-3-3-10 is 0-2%. 4% is max for WINRAR/Encoding! stop wasting money and get a better processor or something! a bump from yuor 3500 to a 3700+ will gain yuo much more performance than premium memory!

Have any of yuo actually read that thread stickied at the top of this catagory?

I'm so sick of people trying to dictate to others how their money should be spent. Some people don't mind paying a premium for a couple of percentage points difference in performance. It's not your money being spent so STFU.

They're just clarifying the situation. Some people have no idea what they're getting, they just heard X was faster than Y and choose X. Is X in this case truly "Amazing", not from what I've seen/heard, unless the poster was talking about the amazing price.

Exactly. Memory is the only case where i think *EVERYONE* wastes their money, unless you are talking about top of the line benchmarking systems.

A higher CPU, better graphics card, better chipset, and faster storage system should always come before faster memory. The only reason to get anything besides valueram without wasting money is if youre getting top of the line EVERYTHING.

lol, have you?

Winrar in KB/s
PC2300 - 3-3-3 1T- 496
PC3000 - 3-3-3 1T- 564
PC3000 - 2-2-2 1T- 636
PC4700 - 3-4-3 1T- 651
PC3800 - 2.5-2-2-1T - 703!!!
Here we see pretty signifigant gains due to bandwidth 41% diff top to bottom. This test obviously is very beneficial to have bandwidth or LL. Update: Crucial Ballistix owning all, Winrar seems the like LL even more than bandwidth. We sorta saw this already by the very close scores of PC3000 LL VS PC4700 high bandwitdh.

anyway, i'm picking it up as part of an upgrade as i build out another box. my main use for this ram will be gaming where typically, in benches that aren't gpu limited, you see a 10% or better difference with say 2-3-2-5 to 3-4-4-8. look at zebos farcry 8x6 or 10x7. (i don't understand the 16x12 as candidate #2 actually gained fps from 8x6 but that must be a typo). look through XS and hard and you can find some other benches as well.

i already have a 3700+ sandy and i'm waiting on my 7800gtx from the step up program. the ram is $136/gb for LL 1 gig sticks. i don't need to be f'in around on my dfi's with ram that sux. :p

Im sorry, we have wasted your time with all this posting, with all the RARing you do this must be distracting. Enjoy your LL memory ;)

Honestly though, looking at your config, you are the exception case i was talking about, where the price/performance factor doesnt apply because you are getting top of the line everything.
