2GB Crucial Ballistix Tracer or 1GB Corsair Xpert

I have a dilemma.

I cannot choose between 2GB (2x1GB) of Crucial Ballistix PC4000 Tracer or 1GB (2x512MB) Corsair XMS Xpert XL. I really like the Xpert's LED readouts.

My question is, will games such as BattleField 2 show an improvement with 2GB over 1GB? If Corsair had made 2GB (2x1GB) Xpert Modules, I wouldn't be asking this question.

However, if I wanted to later upgrade to 2GB with my Xperts, I would be forced to populate all four DIMM slots, thus reducing the speed to 333mhz and 2T (The New AMD Venice Cores are supposed to fix this right?) With the Ballistix, I would be set. But I REALLY like the Xpert LED's. If possible, I would really want to go with the Xperts. But if neccessary, I am willing to sacrifice the beautiful LED's for 2GB if needed.

Thanks.

The downclock to DDR333 speeds can be reversed on some boards. I have 4x512MB sticks of Corsair 3200XL on an A8N-SLI and it did indeed clock it down but they indicate on their website that you can manually go back to DDR400 and I did so with no problems. The 2T thing is true, however, and yes the Venice core is suppose to fix all this.

BTW: What timings are on those Crucial chips?

The LED's are useless for anything except flash, and that grows old really fast.

well im a big bf1942/vietnam and mods gamer.

1 gig is not enough for the mods that these gamesproduce. i have one gig and on point of existence mod i frequently hit my harddrive pagefile due to a lack of system ram. part of my future upgrade is to get 2 gig of ram so im not hitting the damn page file all the time.

For battlefield 2 get the Xperts without questions. 2gb is really only useful for MMORPG's. Make sure you get the TCCD Xperts though ($350 @ Outpost, ZZF, etc) so you can overclock the piss out of them for BF2.

Very true, you could get TCCD chipped memory for $125 less and I have told people the same thing, but if given the choice of those 2 sets for a FPS game...I'd take the Xperts.

Just because it has LED's doesn't mean it is bad memory...I'm not looking for OC wonder RAM such as G.Skill.

Look at it this way....

A) If you really love the LED display (which I do...lol), and think it would be nice to overclock to a high degree if needed, pick up the Xperts.

B) If you're going to play a MMORPG anytime soon then you should seriously consider 2gb of anything.

C) Up to this point, people definitely prefer to have 1gb of overclockable RAM for FPS type games than 2gb of anything. For MMORPG's it has been determined that 2gb is almost necessary for larger environments that could have upwards of 50-100 people on one screen.

FPS=speed
MMO=depth

I'd get two of these.

Yeah, I got two for my girlfriends rig. She really pushes it with The Sims 2, MMORPGs, and photoshop.

No LED's though. Trust me, I want LED's. This system is my Vegas Machine. I do have other computers that are more subtle.

Then get the Xperts & watch everyone at vegas turn green with envy when your RAM says "1 4M T3H XP3RT, UR TEH N00B!!!"

Get some real ram and add LEDs yourself?

Just get glow-in-the-dark nail polish and paint the heatspreader :p

I have 2x512 xpert C2 and I love it. The voltage and temp readings are sweet, as it being able to see when your RAM is crunching or cruising. That never gets old, IMO. BTW, you can NOT populate 4 DIMM slots with xpert, there is not enough room between the slots for 4 displays. Buy you CAN use other 2x512 PC3200 sticks with the xperts, the RamGuy at Corsair forums might give advice on what sticks are happy with xpert. :)
