2D quality still sucks!?

i just sold my 9800pro and purchased an evga 6800NU. i must say its 2d quality is terrible compared to the radeon. this is the first nvidia card ive owned since the ti4200 came out and i was really hoping they had improved on this feature. considering this card costs upwards of $300 you would expect a little better quality. very disappointed =|

What brand of 6800 did you get? I sold my eVGA for the dual DVI XFX because the difference between the DVI and VGA on the eVGA was horrifying.

It's too bad the guys over in that eVGA thread didn't know what they were doing. I had a feeling that these cards would have terrible 2D output.

Maybe after some Doom3 you'll forgive them. 🙂

I know what I'm doing, and my eyes tell me my eVGA 6800nu is ~ my AIW 9700 in 2D IQ at 1600x1200@85Hz. I can compare them directly with the same 22" Mitsubishi monitor by pressing a button. It has dual inputs and my AIW is using BNC btw. I will say that above 16x12, it starts to suffer noticably, but at 16x12..I can't tell much difference.

OK sure. 🙂

It just strikes me as odd that one person finds the 2D horrible while someone else thinks it looks amazing. When I read the eVGA thread it appeared that many of the people there were running DVI, which is why I said that they didn't know what they were doing. I apologize, you *did* know what you were doing.

Actually, now that you mention it, I also remember thinking it was odd that the DVI IQ was reportably poor, Oh and that using a CRT would look "alright" or you couldn't tell...or something to that effect. It seems I agree with you after all🙂

haha man sorry about that but the funniest thing just happend my dog was laying on my keyboard and thats what happend lol sorry

Yeah, I really think with dual CRTs on the eVGA card it wouldn't have been noticable. Comparing the DVI to the VGA side by side on LCDs was horrific though.

I noticed 2D IQ difference between the eVGA and the BFG.. BFG was great, eVGA wasn't, so I took back the eVGA, of course, there were other reasons, such as the lifetime warranty vs the lame 1 year warranty on the eVGA..

I used to be a big fan of eVGA but man, 1 year warranty on a $400+ card? Thats just lame. (aside from the IQ)

On the bright side, looks like Nvidia finally caught up with ATI on 2D IQ. My 6800's look at least as good, if not better, than my 9800Pro did.

Okay guys. How does either the nv6800 or the ati 9800 pro compare to the venerable old Matrox G400? That's what I'll be replacing in this box (yeah, yeah...I know it's ancient...but the G400 isn't going to cut it for HL2 or Doom3).

I ran a G400 for a long time in my workstation several years ago when it was one of the few dual headed cards out there. It's a good card. I still have it in another machine but I haven't used it my current machine which has the 6800 in it. I guess I'm really not contributing anything other than waxing nostalgic about the card. 🙂

Great card in it's day though. What are you still playing with that card? If I remember correctly even Quake III was a bit of a stretch.

Oh, I haven't played any games on the G400 since the days of Freespace2. It's currently sitting in my linux/bsd kernel development box. But I'm going to consolidate that box and my windows/game box (which currently has a Radeon 8500) into a single dual-boot box. With that in mind, whatever card I choose needs to have very good 2D quality, preferably comparable to the Matrox card.

Last time I spent over $300 for a video card was back in '92 or '93 when I bought a Diamond Stealth64 and I promised myself that I'd never spend that much for a card again. So it looks like it's a choice between the 9800pro and the 6800nu (or a lower-end card).

Does anybody know what the IQ is like for the PNY 6800GT? I have the card but I have nothing to compare it to. Is it as bad as the eVGA?
