My apologies if this is slightly off-topic, but how far away is the article comparing the 2D image quality of the current generation of 3D cards? As someone who spends a great deal of time typing text in a variety of editors, I really appreciate a card that delivers razor-sharp 2D. Of the current cards, which is the best chipset for 2D - or is it a case of the passives that surround the chipset being the predominant factor? If the later, which manufacturer uses the best quality passives? Leadtek? Tyan?

Welcome to ATF.
You may want to try that "search" button as this topic has been done many times over. Be sure to search the archives not just the current articles.
To give you an answer: Yes it is the "passives", not the chipset, that determines 2D image quality.
Based on rumor and conjecture the order for 2D quality seems to be: Matrox, ATi, Leadtek, everyone else (let the flamefest begin)

Doh.

Not an auspicious start. Having just searched the posts it seems that people are of one opinion - if its 2D quality you want, get a Matrox P650 or similar and then *never* attempt to play any 3D-based game otherwise you will be sorry. Okay, fair enough, but how about an impartial assesment of the 2D quality of newer cards? The only thing I recall seeing of late was an article on 2CPU where they compared a few - and that article is getting pretty long in the tooth now. There was mention of an upcoming Anandtech article on the subject - any idea how far away it is, or any chance of some preliminary findings?
