OK, before a flame war erupts, I was recently aquired a Visiontek GeForce4 MX440 videocard as a GIFT. It's still sealed in the box. I was wondering if anyone has any subjective opinions on how good its 2D/DVD motion video quality is. I'm not concerned about FPS in games. I was thinking I might install it in an i815 based machine that's currently running the built-in 815video. Also, what driver set is the most STABLE for Win2k and WinXP ?

The term "piss poor" comes to mind. However, if I were to be subjective I might be less polite.

They are NOT piss poor for a budget card and considering you can pick them up the £105 easy.

If your not a hardcore gamer then thats what they are aimed at, most people play between 800x600x16-1024x768x32 and the GF4 MX440 would be fine like that.

considering that the GF4MX 440 can perform about the same as a Geforce2 TI or "pro" and can be overclocked to above "ultra" levels, I'd say there's nothing to complain about with the GF4MX.
Better FSAA too.

If you're not a huge 3D gamer, you'll be very happy with it. And you CAN play the occasional 3D game and it'll still look awesome as well as plenty fast. :)

HOWEVER... if you're only doing 2D "work" and playing DVD's, it's totally unnecessary - you won't see much (if any) difference over the surprisingly good i810/815 video.
This is a 3D card for 3D games. No 3D games = no need - trade it for a new hard drive. ;)

even after all the demands for 2d comparisions, the brain dead reviewers that own sites do not give them. I have yet to see an article on the GF4MX IQ. I wouldn't bother using it, if its anything close to the GF2MX, stay far far away.

The 2d/DVD is very good on the GF4 MX440. I have the Leadtek version and it is a definite improvement over the previous MX series and your 815. The 27.42 and 27.50 drivers work very well with the MX series. I prefer the 27.50 overall. The 27.52 are quicker but the 27.50 seem more stable.

Like I said, it was a gift, so I really can't judge it too harshly. The machine I'm planning to use it in is my secondary machine anyway. It's a Intel D815EEA motherboard w/ 1Ghz PIII and 512MB ram. I'm using it with a 15" Viewsonic LCD @ 1024x768 60hz , so refresh rate won't be an issue. It's been a DEAD STABLE machine, so I just didn't want to throw a wrench in the works and get a lot of BSOD. I sometimes watch music vids on it, that's why I ask about 2D. The only 3D Game I have right now is QuakeII so, I don't think it will be too "challenged" in that dept. Though, all my friends keeps proding me to get "CounterStrike". :) Thanks for the input!
