VR-Zone has learned that NVIDIA will release cheaper GeForce 8800 cards next month to increase pressure on current ATi X1950 lineup targeting at X1950XT 256MB mainly. The new cards will based on the same 8800GTS GPU (96 unified, 24 texture processors and 20 ROPs). It has the same core and memory clock speeds but half the memory size of the current 8800GTS cards. The card will still be known as GeForce 8800GTS but comes with 320MB GDDR3 memories in 10 x 8M*32 array so the memory bus width remains unchanged at 320bit. The card length is the same as the current 8800GTS card at 9 inches and it is still a dual slot. The performance is close to the current 8800GTS 640M but it is US$100 cheaper. Does a price tag of US$299 sounds good to you?

that's how NV gets money out of ATI
yes, ATI may come with better cards, but ppl already would buy NV cards and will not go for better cards in 1-3 months as they would loose so much $$$ ($100 to $300) moving from NV to ATI.

Unless x1950 (DX9) would drop to $100 - $150 price mark.
What the point to pay even $250 for ATI DX9 card where you may get DX10 for $299?

Why ATI comes too late in the past 3 years?

Wowzers. Can you imagine OCing these babies?

It wouldve been better if it was single slot though.

Ouch for people who recently bought any DX9 cards over $250.

I know someone who just got in on one of the $200 X1900XT 256MB cards ... but that's still a $100 difference he probably couldn't have afforded.

I think for those with the $$ this will certainly take sales away from the X1900XT/X1950XT 256MB Cards.

I don't think it's quite low enough to take many sales away from X1950Pros ... Many people still have tight budgets.

I'm still hoping to afford the Dell 30" sometime this year so I'd want a 8800 with gobs of RAM ;)

2x 8800 GTS 320 MB would be nice in SLI :)

(Aside from the many SLI drawbacks...)

$200 would be great for a 8800gts..

the main question would be when any one can buy it for < $299?

if today then all ATI high end sales go to NV no brainer

if in the next month then yes too

if in the next 3 months - may be
if in the next 6 month - ?
if in the next year - who cares ...

320mb would not make any difference (as compared to 512mb or higher) if you game in less than 1680x1050 res I suspect.

It's not going to do much to the X1950pro. Big price disparity there = different markets segments.

W00t! I've been waiting for the cheaper version before I did an upgrade. I only want to game at 1440x900 unlike some of you bad boys. The 6800 is getting murdered by R6V even on super poverty settings so bring on the upgrades :)

But R600 will be a hignend chip.

I think you're talking about R6**, but didn't Dailytech say those weren't coming until June?

Agreed. Very powerful cards. And this type of thing seems to happen with ATI.

Some time after the X800 and X850 Series cam out you could find 9700 Pros and 9800's for $100-$150 on sale.

Some time after the X1900 came out the X800 and X850s dropped to the $150 and below on sale.

Seems like it doesn't happen with NVIDIA though ... their top boards seem to stay pricey. And we need to wait for a low cost refresh or a new midrange card to come out. (6800GTs and 6800 Ultras kept a very high price point. 6800GS became the "value card" from the previous generation.)

Again this is only my perception and not based on research just my own constant obsession with knowing the current hardware deals over the last few years.

Back on topic the GTS 320 is going to be an amazing top end card for those still enjoying all the nice 17" and 19" 1280x1024 LCDs that are out there.

Yep, talking about the R6**, but you had to get all technical on me! Well, DT could be wrong and even so, I am not in the market for a card until around that time anyway. But, I admit I was/am tempted with a GTS 320 MB version...
