295x2, worth getting?

Is it worth it to get a 295x2 card? Currently considering a 980gtx but a 295x2 is not that much more expensive. Will I run into any issues in day to day use with such a card (the 295x2)?

It's for a brand new build by the way, am not just upgrading an already existing system, don't have any old components to recycle

Multigpu isn't worth the hassle imo. The 980 is pretty bad value, so if you're buying now just get a 970, 290 or 290x, if you can wait a little get the cheaper titan x type card or the new amd flagship. I think those cards won't be that much above the current 980 price level.

Do not buy a GPU now. wait for June 24th and then decide. The R9 3xx GPUs are expected to launch and I think you might regret buying a R9 295X2. The rumours are the R9 390X with High Bandwidth memory (HBM) is very close to R9 295X2 perf and could launch for USD 700-800.

Moreover CF support in recent Nvidia Gameworks titles like Farcry 4, AC Unity, Dying Light has been abysmal. It took 4 months from game launch for CF to work in FarCry4 and AC Unity and more than a month for Dying Light to support CF.

Right now? Hell no. And no to 980 too.

Amd will release their new 390 in a little more than a month, nV will release a 980 Ti (cut down Titan with 6GB) in response, probably a bit earlier. Right now is the worst time in 2 years to shop for a high-end gpu. If you are not absolutely desperate to have a gpu before June 20 or so, wait. If you don't wait, you are looking at losing quite a bit of the value of your gpu within a month of receiving it.

I second the others. 980 is a bad buy today on the high end. You can pick up Gigabyte G1 970 for $300 on Newegg which means it shouldn't be too hard to find a 2nd one for $300. $600 970 SLI or 295x2 >>> 980.

At this point wait until June 24th and make your decision. If you must buy now, I would go 970 SLI for 1080P-1440P and 295X2 if you are going 4K. Since 970s have both the Witcher 3 and Batman AK, and you can resell the 2nd coupon, that makes 970 SLI a no brainer over 980 right now.

Maybe I'll just get a single GTX970 and upgrade to a 980Ti when it gets released later. Will probably go with EVGA then, as they have a step up program.

You could do that too, but you would be paying taxes and shipping costs. You can always resell your old card too. It's not like you are forced to be stuck with it.

That sounds like the smart choice. And like Russian said, you can always sell your old card and put that towards a new one.

Went for the EVGA GTX970 FTW. Will probably upgrade down the road to a 980Ti or 390X, whichever one is more appealing.

If you don't mind CLC pump noise, 295X2 is a good buy. I personally would rather have the Devil 13 290X2 air cooled edition, especially if you have one of those cases with plastic air ducts for GPUs to vent air out of the case. I think last month there was a deal for a Devil 13 290X2 with a $80 Corsair mouse for like $540.00.

You can get 2 290s on ebay for 400 dollars right now. Or two new ones for 500 with two copies of Dirt which you could keep one and sell one or sell both making your total cost about 450 plus some time.

If you get a 295x2 you may run into issues with some games, with CF 290s you can disable crossfire when you run into a game that does not support it (see also ubisoft releases) and still have near 970 performance.

Right now I do not think the 295x2 is a smart purchase unless you only have one PCIE slot, play high resolution, and don't mind waiting for CF support on new releases.

sakete what are the other components?

i7 4790K
Asus Z97-Pro
16 GB DDR3-2400
1050W PSU (yes it's overkill for now, but I have it for future expansion).
Bunch of hard drives / SSDs
Dell U2715H (1440p 60 Hz IPS monitor)

I'm building a completely new system from scratch and I've been wanting a desktop for a long time now (been using a laptop the past 2 years, sold my old desktop back then as I moved to another place). So that's why I wanted to go for something right now and will upgrade down the road by either selling my GTX 970 (already ordered it), or if something happens within the next 30 days, exchange it for something else. If Nvidia releases the 980Ti I might use EVGA's step-up program to go to that. Or if the 390X turns out to be a great card I'd go for that instead (have always had AMD cards in the past but don't have a strong preference either way, only really chose the EVGA GTX970 because of the step up program)

When this was price-cut last year, it was a great buy. Now, not so much. Wait for 390x or the 980Ti.

Based on this the 295x2 would be a great choice, however you ought to wait for the R9 390 as it might be close to the 295x2 performance levels (especially when overclocked) & will not consume that amount of power. If you can't wait then the 295x2 is great VFM, the only negative I can think of atm are some (potential) CFX issues that you normally face with a dual GPU card.

Thanks. I was really considering it, but now I'm doubtful of getting it due to potential CFX issues. I think I'll just wait and see what happens with the next generation of AMD cards and perhaps just upgrade to that or to a 980 Ti, whichever has a better price/performance ratio.
