Well I was preparing my system for my new cdrw that i am going to order. I swapped out my adaptec 2930 scsi card for my 2940U2 that originally came out of a gateway system.

The problem is that no matter what I do, Direct CD and Nero will cause the computer to just pause like it is hard locked for about 15-20 secs, then you can use the computer for about 5 secs before it pauses like it is hard locked for another 15-20 seconds. As soon as I uninstall Direct CD and Nero, the computer goes back to being super fast again. I have used these two together for the last two years without any problem. The only variable here is the SCSI card. I even took the CDRW drive to work and it worked fine on my work computer so I know the drive is working. The strange thing is that I have successfully burned 3 regular cds using EZCD creator. It seems really odd that EZCD would work but nero and DirectCD would not.

Are there any special settings I need to make this drive work on the 2940? Is it simply incompatible?

Thanks.

Update:

FYI- mb is Epox 8k7a, not currently overclocked.

Maybe I need to clarify. I am going to buy either a Plextor 1210S or a yamaha 16X scsi burner and want to make sure that they will not have the same problems with this scsi card as does my current yamaha 4416s. According to the specs on the scsi card i shouldn't even be having this problem with the card.

Sounds like a SCSI problem to me. is the card set to terminate properly, and is it using auto temination? And what SCSI connector is the burner on? A 50 or 68 pin? Is it terminating by itself, or are you using an active terminator on the cable? What ID's are you using? Parity ebabled? Async enabled?

Connected to internal 50 pin, only device on this channel. Connected to the last connector and the jumper is on terminate. The card is set to automatic in both termination options.
Parity is enabled and the jumper is on the parity setting on the drive. Drive is set to id 3.

I havn't seen an option to enable async, but in the config bios, under max transfer rate i can choose async. Come to think of it, i don't remember that option with the 2930. Let me try that.

update: Tried choosing async, but same problem, no change.

also made sure that the termination was set correctly on both the card and drive.

What I can't figure out is why Adaptec EZCD creator works flawlessly, yet Nero or Direct CD makes the computer unusable if even loaded. Maybe I should just forget about this card and get a new one for the new drive. I need the old 2930 to go with the old drive for the other computer.

Got it to Work!!!

It is always the simplest things right?

Well it turns out that the only problem was win98se recognizing the card. Apperantly it closely resembles an retail card, but is different enough to cause problems if you let win98 autodetect it. Even though windows manager showed the correct model and what not, I needed the driver file from adaptec. Downloaded it and it now works great with the card set to all the default settings.
