OK, I'm tempted to go for the Tri-X, but a couple of things have me a little concerned. First, out of the 10 reviews on the first page of Newegg's listing, 6 of them discuss cards that failed and/or frequent blue or black screens. I understand that many people who post reviews are those who are unhappy, but still, this seems like quite a lot.

Second, I currently have a 7970 and, while I am sure that a 290X would represent a huge leap forward, I really only have time to play BF4, and I am already able to do that at Ultra on all settings. So, I'm not sure I really need it. Plus, I expect (though could be wrong) to see some killer deals on BF and CM. The biggest reason to upgrade my 7970 would be that I could then pass it down to my eldest son, who is having a few problems in his games. But I'm willing to make him wait until after BF and CM.

Then again, I may not see another deal this good even on BF and CM...

For a single gpu user who is not custom water cooling, the Sapphire Tri-X 290X at this price is an EXCELLENT deal.
it isn't just excellent, it is a no brainer atm if you are in need of a new gpu. and both of the gpus I mentioned comes with 4 new games! easily 100$ value if you don't want them and resell the codes.

I thought my 285$ 290 tri x was a good deal, this is sooo much better :\

the reviews of every card is like that :) especially since the cards are now almost 1 year old. there is no way the cards are made with perfect quality every single time and something may happen during delivery. check other gpu reviews on new egg, you would see the exact same thing.

about bf and cm, from my own experience last year, all the good deals were the few weeks before bf and cm. just a heads up. I got 16 gb of ram at 50$ per 8gb. 50 to 70$ cheaper than it is right now 2 weeks before bf last year.

upgrading or not is entirely up to you, we can't make that decision for you. 290 is about 30 to 35% faster than a 7970. 290x is 5 to 10% over the 290. so make your choice.

Have a gold rated CM 650W power supply with a stock i5 4690k. Both the R9 290 and 290X require 750W (I know, AMD overstates). Think I'd be O.K. with either and that PS? My old HD 7950's ferocious coil whine is getting to me.

I run an overclocked 290x and overclocked 3770K off of a Corsair HX650. You should be fine.

Does this mean used 290x´s will have to go for under $200? I would love to get a reference 290x and water cool it.

used reference 290x were already 200 to 250 $ or so before this price drop within the last few weeks. the only buyers are guys who want to water cool.
