290x psu

I'm looking to build a mini itx system inside the Hadron Air, which only has a 500w psu, but it's gold rated, so I just need to know if it would be smart to pair the 290x with a 4670k (or 3570k), 8 gb ram, 1 ssd, and 1 hdd in this system and overclock the cpu and gpu. Or should I just get a plain case with a 650w psu
 
I'd get the gtx780 at current prices... consumes less power, supports gsync and shadowplay

And yeah i dont think the hadron is good. The fan gets stupidly loud. If u want a small form factor go for fractal node 304 and an atx psu like Seasonic g650. The case will also fit a corsair h90 in push pull for cpu overclocking

I've only heard that the hadron air is silent, but if you don't think the psu can handle the 290x then I won't get it. also I would sooner get a 290 before a gtx 780 because the price to performance ratio is just not there, and i have no desire for gsync and have used up the novelty of shield streaming. I would rather sit at my desk or bring my computer to the living room than play on small 720p screen. (Although I love the shield as a stand-alone gaming device, I havent played vita since i got it)
 
Hmm you may be right about it being quiet, my impression about it being loud came from this thread where some owner said it went crazy loud when gaming. But other reports seem to indicate it's not loud. However it's still possible that with an overclocked 290X, it WILL be loud even if it's quiet at regular loads. Otherwise quiet PSUs typically become loud when pushed to the limit.

With 290X OC'd I'd want to have 650W
 
the 500W PSU should handle it, Intel CPU's and MB's are very power efficient, but with a stock cooler, the 290x will be loud. I'd have a read of this before investing in a 290x.

Definitely worthwhile waiting to see what a difference custom coolers will make to these cards if you are concerned about noise and performance.

well i wouldn't get a reference card, but i just need to know if an overclocked 4670k and 290x would run on this 500w psu
 
no, but i wouldn't want to risk it anyways, if a 290 doesn't work with the average gold 500w psu then I won't even try

Probably be something like:

4670 - 100w w/OC
290x - 300w+ w/OC (see below for example for full system load at stock)
SSD - 5-10w
HDD 10-20w

That is pretty much at the limit of your PSU.

I don't have one on hand, but if you overvolt the card, I can see it drawing 400W itself at the most.

The graph you posted shows watts from the wall. Efficiency is not adjusted for. The 405W stock "Uber" mode draw becomes about 350W when adjusted for efficiency. With whatever overclocking/overvolting is reasonable on air, about 450W is the most that system could draw, but even that is a bit unrealistic. A 550W unit would handle a 290X fine, while a 650W unit would run a bit quieter and provide more headroom for aging (along with a possibility for using four PCIe plugs in a future build).

The limitation is only with the specification that manufacturers should adhere to, if the card demands more power it will draw it, thankfully the 16awg 6/8pin wires wires are thick enough to handle more current.

There have been 8800GT models that have been measured to draw 88w of 12v from the PCIe slot alone.
 
Remember that Anandtech chart is displaying "Total System Power Consumption." - Not card only.

The whole system is hitting 405W max.

Add a few fans and drives, maybe +20w - a 500W PSU can handle plenty.
