So I just opened up my Radeon 2900XT out of the package popped it in after I installed my new power supply, I got an Antec TruePower 650w. I hooked up everything including the 2 pci-express adapters and the extra 2 prongs that the pci-ex adapter needs for this card and the thing won't boot. My system just beeps, card lights up red and fan spins but no display at all. I tried another power supply a OCZ 700w and again no display. I messed around with it for another 4 hours before putting in my old card and it booted up right away. Now a friend told me something about a fault light on Radeon cards that light up a red led if the card is faulty and mine was lighted up (I actually would love to know if this is normal or not from other 2900xt owners). I mean what's the deal, card is faulty already I just got the thing. Anyone know the RMA turn around on the cards?

If the card is that new I would send it back to where you bought it. You will likely just get a refurb back if you RMA back to the manufacture and I would not be happy about that and it that new.

try unhooking the 2 extra prongs and just run the 2 6-Pin power leads into the card's plugs - the 6-pin lead only fits one way in the 8-pin plug. Leave the two "extra" prongs uncovered. ... and reseat your card [anyway]. The two "extra prongs" are part of a 8-pin plug that needs a [new] 8-pin PCIe power plug to OC ... if it works, leaving the two pins uncovered just means you can't use CCC to OC. :p

Yeah I did because on my OCZ power supply it only has the 2 6pin pci-ex adapters and on the Antec one I have it has the 6 and 8 pin pci-ex. I have tried reseating the thing several times with no luck. I can't really return it, bought it used, it's an actual ATI brand though so it's still under warranty I'm sure. Only problem is the ATI tech support is only open from like 9-3 while I'm at work and this stupid email tech support doesn't work worth anything.

If you bought it used, return it to the person you bought it from and get your money back. They obviously sold you something DOA.

edit: where did you buy it? Forums? Ebay?

Heh a friend of mine had the same problem with a 2900xt, and I wish I could have talked to apoppin back then, because completely at the end, when we really didn't know what to do, we left out the extra 2 prongs, and the system booted just fine. He can't OC his card now, but who cares, it's running :p If it is really dead though, then you're screwed, I hope warranty, or contacting the seller works out for ya.

Did you perchance try reseating it with the antec PSU AND only the 2 pin 6 power leads ? I know you tried with the OCZ PSU, but try it with the antec PSU as well, just to be sure ...

Yeah I tried it every way I could the thing just wouldnt post, the computer would spin up but it would just throw a VGA card beep error. Yes I did try it with the 2 6pin on the Antec PCI Express instead. This just sucks, back on my X850XT again. I think I'm gonna have to call up ATI for RMA since the seller won't contact me

Bought it off Ebay actually, guy had really good feedback too, over 300 positive

ATI tech support just said they want me to RMA the thing so my assumptions were correct. Bummer, I'm gonna send this thing fast so I can get it back, might as well upgrade some more while I'm waiting.

How would they know I am the 2nd user, it's not like they ask for a receipt, they only want your serial number and part number, if it was never registered before I don't see it being a problem.

Did you even contact the guy who sold it to you off of Ebay? These ebay sellers need to be held accountable. They sell their products for BS prices and then when they sell something broken they are held accoutnable? You need to do your part and contact hm and see what he says. I wonder if he knew it was broken.

Keep us updated as far as any contact with the eBay seller. I'm curious to hear about their explanation, and if the person will offer a partial refund, etc.

Well I'm pissed, first the seller is like telling me via email that it was sold as is no refunds. So I'm out of a nice bit of money there. Secondly I thought it was a genuine ati card but it appears not to be, I'm pretty sure it's a powercolor one even though theres no way you can really tell from looking at it. The RMA from them looks like crap, first of all you pay for shipping both ways takes 4 weeks supposedly and you have to pay for shipping with a money order. Not to mention on top of all of this for some reason after installing this new power supply I'm getting problems with my hard drive not working even though everything is plugged in, some PCI cards won't even work now. They light up and spin but windows says no system resources available.

What does his ad say?

and you'd better be sure before you try to RMA it ... being unsure is a certain way to get a denial.
... are you sure it's your PS and not your MB? Try putting the old GPU and PS back in.

moral of the story: don't buy something off ebay for $300. If life throws you a curve ball and you must buy a $300 vid card on ebay, make sure that you have a plan if it is doa.

Who was the seller?

ps: you'd better kill that guy on ebay.

Most decent sellers on ebay have some kind of DOA return policy. You seem to have gotten unlucky and run into a particularly nasty guy, but at the same time you should have looked over the item description carefully for the return information, which is generally specified at the bottom of the auction page.

ebay is generally good as long as you make note of these things before bidding. I got my current X1900XTX from there for $400 new, which was about $130 less than the best retail prices back then.

Or use PayPal + CC so you can withhold the funds from him

I hope you didnt spend much on that card. You have to check to see if they sell cards "as-is". Even so, I would think you might stand a chance by complaining to Ebay if he advertised it as working. Do you have a link to the auction? (you can still view Ebay pages after auction is over)

Personally, i would only use ebay to get a cheapo card like the x800 vanilla i have right now. Too many dumb bidders jack up the prices on ebay. If more people sniped, prices would stay reasonable.

Regarding the DOA thing. You also have to think of this from the sellers standpoint. I have been selling all my cards as well as other equipment on EBay since 2000 and have 100% positive feedback since I wrap all items in bubble-wrap and use popcorn for shipping. I never have offered a DOA return policy because what would stop a disreputable buyer who didn't like the performance of a card I sold him, from applying a well placed electrical shock or damaging the card in another way, just to get his money back. So it works both ways. What I do is always ship with insurance for the cost of the item. So if the item is damaged when it arrives, the buyer is covered.

And livingsacrifice sorry to hear you've been screwed. What motherboard are you using exactly and what was your previous card?

Um well, I did pay with paypal so I guess I could retract the thing. Hey who knows I might be able to get this repaired from Powercolor, in like a month or two. I'm using the socket 939 Asus a8n-e and the previous card is the x850xt, which I am using at the moment. Now the reason I was going to buy from this guy is because he had 99% positive and over 100 feedback, normally don't have problems with sellers like that. Unfortunately that was not the case, I just left him some nasty feedback.
