286 as a server of some sort?

I have an IBM PS/2 286. Its running DOS 3.3, 8mhz under the hood, etc. What I was wondering is, is it possible to use it as some sort of server, either FTP or web, without running linux on it? Also, it needs to have a network card. Anyone know where I could find such a thing for this ancient dionsaur of a computer? Thanks.

not really, it wouldn't be worth it....

That box is too old to be of any use, other than a paper weight. Its not a 32-bit CPU, so you can't really run any of today's OSes (*nix, Windows, etc).

the older 286's are great, and still useful today! Every winter i load two of them in my trunk, they're cheaper than sandbags. and the ones with rubber feet don't roll around like sandbags . . .

I wouldnt bother. If you need cheap servers then pick up some high end 486s or some pentiums.

You will spend more time and money trying to find hardware to suit your 286s. Going for slightly more modern PCs is just easier and cheaper.

Try going to a local thrift store to find old, cheap computers.

Or you could even ask some of your friends if you know that they are into PCs.
