280m gtx. No benchmarks anywhere. Hows it stack up?

The only benchmarks I can find are from some notebook site that don't even compare it to anything else. How does this card stack up, and would it make more sense to go with 1 280m or sli 9800m's given the price difference?

Anyone got a benchmark?

What about actual performance wise, you can't really pick out one spec and judge it by that. Aren't they completely different architectures and different clockrates for the core/shader/memory?

From the link he provided:

GeForce 9800M GTX SLI
3DMark03 - 30639
3DMark05 - 16101
3DMark06 - 11288

GeForce GTX 280M
3DMark03 - 36865
3DMark05 - 18082
3DMark06 - 11767

280M looks faster in all synthetic benchmarks. You'd need to go research a few laptops with each of those GPUs and see if you can find the same games being tested and match up the FPS scores. That said, the 280M looks like a beast. My laptop with the 280M will be here on Monday!!!!

Also, the 280M is a 55nm chip vs 65nm. It's also two GPU vs. 1 GPU. You're most likely going to see lower heat output and better battery life.

Well, thanks. I incorrectly assumed there would be more quality benchmarks out there for the latest laptop hardware but I guess there isn't. Kind of makes me think making a hardware website for laptops similar to anandtech would have like 100% of the market. I'll let my friend know, he's likely going to get a single 280m laptop.

LOL, there are a few really good websites dedicated only to laptops. The problem is you're not willing to do the research. You have to look at individual reviews of the laptops, not just strictly hardware reviews. The problem is that GPUs can't be tested on a single testbed like a standard desktop, the use different slots and its not easy to swap the gpu out in most cases. So you need to just try and find reviews of similar spec systems.

Notebookreview.com
laptopmag.com
notebookcheck.net
laptoppimp.com
pcworld / cnet / pcworld
laptoplogic.com

Any of those sites will have reviews of laptops and their hardware.

Well, its a friend whose buying a laptop, I would never buy a laptop as I believe they are shitty for the price and I'd rather carry my HAF 932 around than buy an underpowered laptop for loads of cash. So technically he should be doing the research but I doubt he will so I figured I'd make a quick post and a quick google search. The idea was to find someone here who has done the research to tell me quite succinctly that the 280m is approximately xx% faster than a 9800m, something along those lines. It didn't happen.

I wrote that post with my friend sitting beside me from his perspective. He's one lazy mofo who can't be bothered to move his desktop. If you've read any of my posts in the case and cooling area I generally pimp the haf 932 case and try to reason with those who would spend more money on lian-li for lighter weight and less cooling. I can see how you got confused but maybe you should save the insults until you get the story instead of jumping on me like a woman waiting at the front door.

so you want to be spoon fed? if you cant calculate the numbers based on the benchmarks already given, and find out yourself how better it is by xx% then nobody will do it for you. you already have numbers to work with that at least would give you a general idea

When I research hardware for myself I like to be very thorough. Much moreso than a few 3dmark numbers with no reference as to how. In this case however, I"m doing the research for a friend whose too damn lazy to do any himself so its kind of like I just want to stop the worst from happening. It doesn't matter much now though - he's decided to save up for a house instead. Yep, shouldn't of even tried to help him at all.

They are pretty close with the 280M winning just by a hair. The advantage the 280 has is the single chip reliability, producing less heat and having lower power consumption. Also, there will likely be increases in performance with driver maturity. That's why I personally picked the 280M over any other GPU.
