Yes we are talking 105 centigrade, right now its 20C in my room.

I have a Leadtek 280GTX that I am borrowing while mine is fixed - that maxes out at about 88C. The BFG 280 is clearly faulty!

ruh roh. methinks you are screwed amigo, unless you can get on this re-rma quickly. bfg is going away, they've laid off almost everybody. good luck getting warranty service from a bankrupt company.

Well according to a press release regarding them leaving the GPU industry...

"We will continue to provide our award-winning power supplies and gaming systems, and are working on a few new products as well. I’d like to stress that we will continue to provide RMA support for our current graphics card warranty holders"

...so hopefully thats not the case!

well, bfg has had a great reputation for a long time, and I'm sure that if they can then they will make every effort to honor their warranty. unfortunately, unless they have warranty reinsurance from a 3rd party you will be in a lot of trouble if they go bankrupt. you would have to join a class action lawsuit, and your claim would basically go at or near the back of the line.

As long as they're still in business you'll be ok, but what can they do if they have no revenues? several well known forum members here used to work for them but have been laid off. video cards was their # 1 source of revenue by far, they were trying to branch out (psus for example) and it didn't work. they should have switched over to amd when xfx did. Clearly there is only room for one top end nvidia distributor, and evga appears to have sunk the other guys' battleship.

Have you tried monitoring the fan to see if it spins up faster than the baseline 40%? Have you tried manually cranking up the fan speed?

I'd blow out the dust from the heatsink, if that doesn't do it then re apply thermal paste. I had to re apply thermal paste to my old 8800gt before

The fan on the card is either not spinning @ 100 percent or theres too much dust on the fins and its preventing cooling. Blow it off clean it. Use riva tuner and change fan speed to 100 percent when you play games,, and like 50 percent on desktop... hope you get it sorted out fast thats temp the card can handle, but its dangerous.. okie gl,,

No, only temps - whats a good fan monitoring software?

Also, if this is the problem it still means the card is faulty....

So to update:

I reapplied for an RMA last Thursday (22/07/10), but BFG have not got back to me with any kind of response.

I am pretty frustrated with this now. Its been 3 weeks since all this began and I am still without a functional GPU.

I think all this business about pulling out of the GPU market has impacted their customer service/RMA process.

I'll keep you all updated so you know what to expect in case any of you have BFG products that go wrong in the future.

Warning! This story does not have a happy ending.

So, after emailing BFGs tech support/RMA service for the past week and a bit, I have had absolutely no response. It appears their RMA partner in Wales no longer works with them (you ship the cards to them, they test them, and ship them onto BFG US for a refund), and they have all but pulled out of Europe. Despite the chairman claiming in interviews that they would continue to support the owners of cards that were under warranty, this has certainly not been my experience of the situation. As far as I can tell my RMA case is dead in the water, and since it’s a US company and I live in the UK, I have very little comeback.

Can’t afford a new card either...

I am sad…..

Yeah shit happens. It's hard economic times, not everyone is going to make it, it is sad to see BFG go though.
