I saw this on their website last night in the clearance section. $109.99 is the price with shipping.

They advertise the warranty as 1 year. But I bought a Quantum SCSI drive from Egghead also with an advertised 1 year warranty. Upon receiving the drive, I did a serial number lookup on the Quantum website and found out it's guaranteed out to 2003.

So these are probably leftover Maxtor drives and may even have 2 or more years remaining on the factory warranty.

Decent deal if you can't pricematch anybody or use any coupons, and need a relatively large 5400 rpm drive in a hurry.

EDIT Just looked at it again. Generically labeled! Avoid, repeat, avoid this drive.

Any other decent deals around for a 20GB+ IDE drive. 5,400 is fine and actually preferred for the noise.

huh?? Generic drive? So it's not a Maxtor? Wonder how they can justify calling it a maxtor drive then.

Speaking of Maxtor, did anyone see the news today? Maxtor and Quantum to merge.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Computer hard drive products maker Maxtor
Corp. (NasdaqNM:MXTR - news) on Wednesday said it would buy
Quantum Corp.'s disk drive unit, Quantum HDD (NYSE:HDD - news), for
about $1.3 billion in stock, creating one of the world's largest disk drive
makers.

jhassi: These drives may be pulled from some leftover Compaq or Everex systems. So, they probably have the computer manufacturer's label.

Avoid these drives. I was warm to them last night and up until a few minutes ago. Then I read the fine print again. Quantum and Seagate won't honor the factory warranty on drives from computer manufacturer's systems. Western Digital does sometimes if you complain enough.

Get a Quantum, WD, IBM or Maxtor with a longer warranty from another vendor. Spend the extra couple of dollars. It's worth the headaches later.
