27 inch 1080p

I sit no more than 2' from my 27" 1080p monitor. With AA and cleartype, it is perfectly fine. I prefer larger and comfortable to read. Higher PPI may be nice, but so is larger viewing areas, and higher refresh rates with low response times. Everything is a compromise. I prefer larger panels and high refresh rates.

I use a 24'' 1080p monitor myself, but I bought a 27'' 1080p monitor for my wife, since she specifically wanted one (apparently, size does matter 😀 ). I played a few games on it to check the effect of reduced pixel density and didn't find it too jarring. Some very specific effects or areas did seem a little pixelated, but nothing that would make me not buy another 27'' 1080p monitor. I'd say you can easily go ahead with buying one if you like the thought.

I'd probably get a 27'' one, even for 1080p. Though if you are willing to spend a little more, there are some great Korean imports on Ebay with 27'' and higher resolutions. I think there's a pinned thread about those here on AnandTech.
 
I prefer size over ppi, less eye strain and more immersive during gaming. I sit about 27" from my monitor, Dell S2740L. Honestly I would prefer a 30" or so during gaming, but I'm waiting for 4K/HDMI 2.0 to be affordable and I'll get something like that.
 
I took a look at a 27" 1080p monitor at a store a few days ago and it looked absolutely horrible. It's way to few pixels for that size. I couldn't recommend a 27" 1080p monitor to anyone.
 
My BenQ 2750HM is the perfect balance, things aren't too big or too small. Plus there aren't any 27" VA panels over 1080p. IPS is a no no for me.
 
I used a 27" 60hz 1080p but swapped it out for a 24" in order to get 144hz refresh rate. However I must say that I like the smaller area for 1080p, it's more balanced. 27" just seems inflated

Something was just not right in your case, a decent 27" monitor will not look "horrible" due to "too few pixels".

I chose a 27" 1080 (120hz) unit over a 1440p unit going at almost same price and quite happy with it. On light backgrounds, you can see pixels but only if you were looking for them. This in regular PC work, in gaming, much less so. I even tried gaming on a 32" 1080p TV and liked that even more.. just not convenient as a permanent monitor.
 
I went from 27" 1080p to 27" 1440p and it was like going from night to day. The old monitor was acceptable for gaming (with AA) but desktop work was far from pretty. High PPI is a good thing
 
I use a Dell S2740L that sits about 2 feet away, and I've had no complaints. I don't really do any gaming anymore, but I watch a lot of cinema on it and desktops look fine. I never notice any pixelation, and small text looks fine. For limited use such as mine, you'll be fine with a decent 27in 1080p panel.
 
I just picked up a 1080p LG 27" IPS the other day (Went to this from a 1080p 23" Acer). I sit less than 2ft away from the monitor, and I think the new 27" looks much better as far as color accuracy, deeper blacks, more vibrant colors. I was in the same boat as you, my other option was a smaller 24" 1900x1200 Auria brand. Unfortunately micro center did not have the 24" 1900x1200 monitor on display and I wasn't willing to risk buying it, taking it home and not liking it. All in all, I am very pleased with my 1080p 27in screen. I have played CS:GO, TF2 and BF4 on it thus far and see nothing but an improvement over my previous monitor

I have read through the thread a bit and I dont understand what you are talking about... 1080p with lets say a 24`` doesnt look nice? I was about to buy a 1080p for the ps3 and the pc...

While I am on the subject of the ps3, if the console outputs 720p for most games, and the tv has only 1080p will the games look ok or will they look horrible because of upscaling? I cant find tv's with both 720p and 1080 and it seems stupid getting a just 720p one for just the ps3 games.

Or maybe it makes sense a 720p one because in a 24`` tv, one cannot see the difference between that and 1080p¿

No it was not something wrong. It's just that 1080p on a 27" monitor at computer monitor distances(70-100cm) is just to few pixels. I think that 1080p on a 24" is on the low side. But on a 27" it's just looks incredibly pixely. Text was hard to read because of the pixels. I didn't have to look for them. They where very easy to see.

Are you sure that the display was properly setup on the test system? They may have had the resolution set to the wrong one, or some sharpness and cleartype issues. I know that some stores will purposefully make a lot of their displays look as poorly as possible to direct customers to stock they want to sell off first.

When looking at displays at a store, you always have to adjust the settings to get a real representation of what they look like.
 
I personally can't stand using the original iPad and iPad mini because the pixel density is so low, and my laptop is a 15" Macbook Pro w/ Retina. However, my daily driver desktop monitor for the longest time was a 120 Hz 27" 1080p monitor, and I loved it! Go figure. Something about viewing the monitor from a comfortable distance (rather than in my lap) meant the pixel density didn't bother me much. Just a month ago I replaced the 27" monitor with a 1080p 24" Eizo FG2421, which is an amazing monitor but I'm a bit bummed out about the smaller screen size.

Anyways, to me it's all about ergonomics. IMO a 27" 1080p monitor will ALWAYS be better than a 24" 1080p monitor assuming you can can place the monitor at the comfortable distance. Having a big desk is key 🙂
