The dealership offered $27,600 on the Volkswagon GLX AWD. Would that car be worth getting? How reliable is it?

My parents are planning on buying one within the next couple days.

Edit: I also can't get into edmunds, it seems down for me.

Pics/specs/prices/any information?

I don't mean to be judgemental, but why not buy American? Our economy is struggling and buying a new car can really help things here.

Don't really have any pics, all I know is that it's blue. It's just the GLX, it pretty much comes with a lot, I don't know the exact specs. The price is $27,600.

My parents arent' really into American cars, and besides, it's not like all American cars are made in America.

If you made it a Ford, Honda, etc, thread, you'd get flames. Remember, you're posting on AT. People love to flame questions.

The VW Passat is an EXCEPTIONAL car. The last 2-3 year's VWs had an ignition coil issue, but that has been resolved. For $27k, you can't do better. It drives like a BMW or Audi (which it shares parts). It fast, beautiful and reeks of interior quality! You can't go wrong with this car. It's still Consumer Reports car of choice after 4 years at the top.

I agree. My parents have a 2000 top trim level (GLX?) 4Motion and it's a very nice car. Besides a couple (2 or 3) factory recalls I believe it has been trouble free.

My '99 Passat GLX has been flawless.

I'd probably not get the 4motion for the simple fact that i need fold down rear seats (not available on the 4motion).

And yes, that's a good price.

Because American cars are a very poor investment. Also, buying American typically has little direct effect on our economy because of offshore production.

At least compare cars in the same class.

Wrong.

Reliability info for Passat
Reliability info for Accord
Reliability info for Camry

Consumer Reports also rates the Passat as a "Best Buy".

You were saying? kthxbye.
I agree with you. But your links provide no data for the past 3 years of all 3 of these cars.

The Passat has changed very little from 98/99. So the reliability numbers from those years should carry through.

Every new car is a poor investment. A VW's depreciation isn't much better than most American vehicles.

Aside from the AWD, they are in the same class. The EX V6 Accord pushes $27,000 and is about the same size as the Passat,

Actually, the Passat's rate of depreciation is among the best from what I've seen.

If it were me, I'd try and get an audi A4 1.8t with quattro. I think its almost in the same price range, and you can get sports package, which is a huge improvement over the somewhat floaty passat suspension. And, the A4 has xenons as an option, good for visibilty, plus a host of other features.

Plus, the A4 comes with free scheduled maintenence, something the passats and VWs don't come with. I belive the warranties are similar though.

Shuddap you VW haters. Unless you own a Vee Dub and it's dog sh!t, keep it to yourself. I have a 2000 Jetta and it's been _totally_ problem free.
