27-28'' LCD monitor vs. 32-37'' LCD TV

Assuming both have a resolution of 1200/1080p which one would you rather have for computer taks and gaming?

i like to sit somewhat close to my computer, so i prefer the "smaller" monitor. i'm not too keen on sitting close to a 37" panel.

Monitor. Easily, unless you need the extra inputs the TV would have. (which the monitor may anyway, depending on model)

It'll be 1920x1200, which is better than 1920x1080.

Also, pixel pitch is plenty large on a 27-28" LCD, not tiny like on 30" or 24" LCDs.

my vote is definitely for a (good) LCD TV. check out my thread about the Westinghouse LVM-37w3se - 37" of 1080p beauty. the huge screen makes a BIG difference for your gaming & movie watching experience. surprisingly, it's an exceptionally good screen for basic desktop usage too.

wow..that is pretty sweet...how's the pixel pitch? isn't it too big for browsing the web from like 1m away?

not at all. as you'd expect, text is larger (which reduces eye strain), but surprisingly, still razor sharp. i highly recommend you go to a store that will let you hook up a laptop to a 1080p display so you can see for yourself, it's really impressive in person.

ya i'll probably do some in store testing to get a feel for the different sizes before i buy one. I guess another good thing about a 37'' is that it's gigantic for games and you do not need the best video card every month to enjoy games at it's native resolution compared to a 30"+ monitor with much higher resolution

yea, 2560x1600 is a beast for any video card to handle and one of the main reasons i didn't go for a 30" lcd monitor.

granted, for both monitors and tv's you do have the following options if your video card can't handle the resolution:

1. play at a lower resolution and have the screen stretch the image. this results in a loss of IQ, but shouldn't be too bad with games (sucks for text though).
2. play at a lower resolution, but keep the screen 1:1. this effectively means you're playing on a smaller screen. however, if your video card can only handle, say 1680x1050, this is only about 13% less than 1080p, so the 37" screen would be roughly like a 32" screen. however, 1680x1050 is only around 60% of a 1600p screen, so the 30" monitor would be roughly a 19" screen with 1:1.

I'm using a 27-inch Samsung 275T monitor, and I like its combination of pixel size and screen size. I sit pretty close to it, and the pixel pitch doesn't bother me when surfing the web or editing photos, while the extra size looks really good in games. But these things aren't cheap, you could definitely get a bigger TV for that money if you feel you need an even bigger screen.

I'd go with the monitor as well. 19x12 LCDs with the proper inputs make fine HDTVs, but I find LCD TVs seldom make the transition to PC monitor as seamlessly, especially when you're just browsing text etc.

Edit: Samsung just announced a 32" Gamer's LCD TV" for @$1600 at CES. Might be the hybrid panel gamers have been waiting for, although the price is still a bit steep.

I use a 28" LCD at work (1900 x 1200) and it's great for everyday work stuff (programming, email, word docs). However I'm not sure I'd want to work with a 37" screen for long periods of time. Games and Movies would be awesome, though. So I'd rather have the 37" for movies and gaming, and a 27-28" for work. Maybe a 32" 1080P LCD is a good compromise.

Yeah..exactly, that's what i wanted to ask. So the consensus is that console gaming on 27-28'' monitors is better than text/browsing on 32-37'' TVs?

As a side note, which one is better for computer gaming? vga,dvi or hdmi? Cause if it's hdmi than you'd want a monitor with 2 hdmi inputs in order to hook up a console at the same time.

I game on my 40" Samsung and LG 32" 1080p.......The worst of my monitors easily surpasses both when it comes to quality, image, color....amongst many other things.

By worst I mean 25" IINC and 24" Samsung I have. They just look SO much better.

I think the size of pixles has a lot to do with it.
